1992 MEN'S FINAL
Mike Powell, who had qualified only fourth in his preliminary round, dominated the competition to win the 1992 Superstars title. Powell, the world record holder and world champion in the long jump, won four of his five events and set Superstars records in two of those events. Powell beat out another Olympic silver medalist, water polo's Terry Schroeder, by ten points. Kansas City Chief linebacker Derrick Thomas finished a distant third place. Competition began in the swimming pool with a 50 yard event, and to no one's surprise Schroeder won easily. Despite an average start, Schroeder finished in 23.47 seconds to break the record of 23.53 seconds set by diver Greg Louganis is 1986. Seth Joyner of the Philadelphia Eagles looked pretty comfortable lifting 300 pounds to beat out fellow N.F.L.'ers Jeff Lageman and Derrick Thomas, both of whom lifted 300 pounds. The athletes returned to the water, and an upset was in the offing. Powell, who had failed to score a point in the preliminary round in the kayaking, defeated preiliminary winners Schroeder and Lageman handily. Powell then took his skills to the basketball court. There was some controversy, as athletes are generally paired with each athlete given 60 seconds to score points from various areas of the court. Since an odd number of athletes entered the event, Powell by luck of the draw was unopposed. Dallas Cowboy quarterback Steve Beuerlein totalled 33 points, just one short of the record of Barry Sanders and Gary Anderson. Powell then went off by himself and was clearly at an advantage. He poured in basket after basket as Beuerlein and the rest of the field could only look on and count Powell's growing score. He finished with a new record of 36 points and his second win. Had Powell not had such an advantage, and had he scored less than 26 points, Terry Schroeder would have won the overall title. Such is the math of the Superstars. With Powell and Schroeder tied at 21 points, the athletes took to the bikes. Powell had decided to sit this event out, and it was Schroeder's final event as he had opted out of the 100 yard dash and the obstacle course. Schroeder powered past Derrick Thomas for the win and a 10 point lead over Powell. In the 100 yard dash, Powell overcame an average start to pull away from the rest of the field and win in 9.50 seconds. Powell had tied Schroeder in the overall competition at 31 points, but with the obstacle course remaining and with Powell holding a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Schroeder, Powell was the Superstars champion. Still, Powell did not let up, despite a bobble in the tires, Powell zoomed through the second half of the obstacle course to qualify for the final against Brian Jordan. With the pressure off, Powell put it all on the line in the obstacle course. He grabbed to the of the 12 foot wall without using the rope, was efficient through the blocking sled and the tires, he had no problem over the water hazard and then leapt over the 4'6" high bar and the landing mat to explode to a new record of 21.12 seconds, shaving a quarter of a second off the record of Willie Gault from six years ago. Powell became the fourth track and field athlete to win the Superstars title, but continued the Olympic curse of athletes competing in an Olympic year. None have ever gone on to capture Olympic gold.
