Background
Reynaldo (Rey) Ordoņez played for the Cuban National team at the World University Games in Buffalo NY in 1993 and defected at the end of the Games.
Graduated from Espa High School in Cuba
Attended Fajardo College in Havana for two years.
In 1989, as a member of the Cuban National Youth baseball team, he played in Russia, Korea and Canada.
In 1990, he was voted the Amateur Rookie Baseball Player of the Year in Cuba.
In 1992, Rey won a gold medal while representing the Cuban National Youth team in Mexico.
