FUN IN THE FAROES (MFC Exiles Club Newsletter 4)

On the 22nd of August your intrepid reporter donned the tammy and scarf and headed north in search of European glory. We travelled with the official club party and arrived at our base in Torshaven after a journey which consisted of a 90 minute plane journey, ferry crossing and 2 bus trips! And I complain about an hour on the bus to Easter Road!

The hotel was really good and a fine spread was laid out for hungry 'Well fans later that evening. With various rules on alcohol in the Faroes pubs were tricky to track down to say the least. However a drinking house was expertly found and I literally mean drinking house as entry consisted of going through a close into a back garden, up some stairs and into what looked like a converted living room! The evening was spent signing happily and sampling the local brew 'Foraya Bjor'. By the end of he night the locals were in no doubt the Motherwell boys were in town!

Tuesday dawned and the morning was spent visiting Havnar Boltfelag's (HB) ground which is shared with another club. Both have their own stands which contain club offices, dressing rooms etc. Souviners were purchased and a photo or two taken of the club rooms inside and the impressive trophy room.

The Faroese people were all kind and friendly to 'Well fans and none more so than an HB fan called Danny. This guy had been to the first leg and was delighted with the reception he received in Motherwell and was determined to repay the kindness shown. He did that and some. 'Well fans were all taken to his restaurant and given free bar and a measure of a Faroese drink given to welcome people. Danny even gabe us the beer glasses to keep as souviners.

Match time was approaching and we said our goodbyes to the beautiful harbour town and made our way through rugged mountainous country to Toftir where the match was being played.

This was at the top of a mountain and was incredibly windy and cold. Before the match some 'Well fans had a kick-about on the astroturf pitch outside the ground but it remains to be seen if McLeish will sign anyone! The game ended and it was back through the mountains, across on the ferry and it wasn't long before we were home. A great time was had by all 'Well fans.
