The Fairy Queen
by Julianne
The air was still moist from the evening dew as we tramped through the dark and fore-boding forest. Grass rose up to our
knees making it difficult to walk fast. Not a single bird chirped. Not an animal stirred. Even the trees seemed to have stopped there swaying.
Our clothes were muddy and our hair was stuck to our faces because of the dew. We all trudged slowly to our goal, each with
there own thoughts.
Jenna, our leader, was the only one of our clan that did not have discouraging thoughts on their minds. She strode purposely
and with her chin up. She did not speak, but gestured to show when to stop, when to turn and when to watch our feet. I think
she was in her own private world.
Our goal was to find the fairy queen. Our kingdom was in agony, and the only way to protect ourselves from evil was to get a
special dust that can only be found deep in the heart of the Ancient Forest. The fairy queen kept it and only gave it to the worthiest travellers. The only thing was that she would only see children, which was why Jenna, Ron, April and I were travelling
like this, so uncomfortable.
Jenna was from another country and had seen the fairy queen before. She said the queens' name was Queen Eleanor. Jenna
says that we were sure to find her and that we would certainly get what we were looking for. But Jenna's full attention was not
on that. It was on what had happened on her last expedition. The rest of her clan had fallen off a cliff leaving her to find her way back. Alone.
Suddenly Jenna stopped causing Ron to fall into a pile of mud. He looked awful mad, but Jenna put a finger to her lips. She
drew back a few branches and beckoned us to look. I saw the most beautiful sight I had ever seen in my life. There was a large
field, all with thousands of flower patches scattered around. There were daisies, roses, pansies, violets, petunias, and many
exotic flowers. In the middle of the meadow was a giant willow tree where tiny fairies flew, round and round, no bigger than a
dime.
Queen Eleanor sat on a huge tulip, surrounded by all the lesser fairies had brought her. She was a larger fairy, with a dress of
starlight, and a crown of moon shine. She had hair the colour of gold, and lips the shade of rose.
Behind her stood to fairies, acting as guards which was quite silly because we were hundreds times the size of them. We thought they would be afraid of us, but they weren't. Most of them continued o what they were doing except one who took me by the hand and led me to Queen Eleanor. She handed me a basket filled with silver dust and smiled at me. I'll never forget that smile. She waved good-bye and we left. And that was my experience with the fairy queen.
