I liked to take good notes as a college student, but I could not always keep up with the teacher.

As a partial solution, I developed the following set of abbreviations. The indented line explains the outdented description:

• ch with the bottom of the h curling back under the two letters, so that it's partially underlined. Later iterations looked like cl with the line going back under the "c"
  Change or changes

  An elevated dot following a word. That dot represents the only remnant of a historical i after the "ng" had been dropped

  An -ing ending

  An underscore following a word

  An -ed ending

  VI in which the two letters touch each other; later iterations look like the Russian capital letter that is similar to a mirror-image capital N

  Very important; later iterations simply mean "important"

  nVI

  Not important

  Lower case m with a line coming back under it. The line then returns to the right

  Most, or most important

  Educ

  Educate; education. An elevated dot following the symbol, indicates "educating"

  An inverted capital V

  Learn. With an elevated dot following it indicates "learning"

  An extended and attached right underscore following to the right: "Learned"

  Librarian
