For years I wanted to write books, but I realized my limitations. I'm living in Israel. The books that I would write related to a world-wide audience. In order to distribute the books properly I would have to distribute them in the United States, and that would be unrealistic while I'm in Israel. I wanted to have the stability of living and remaining in Israel.
I faced other problems as well. There was no way to work out how to collect the royalties unless I had a bank account in the United States. Since I did not have an American address, this was not an option.
So for some time I gave up on the idea of writing books, although I was very disappointed about it.
But things changed.
I taught myself how to set up a basic website. Experts who look at the websites might criticize the way that it is done, but that doesn't matter. My goal was to be able to have a place in which I could publish my books. I was able to do that with the websites.
In hindsight, this method may have been far superior to writing books.
Writers rarely make money writing books unless they have best sellers. For those who are not known authors, it usually is just not worth it.
Royalties in no way cover the time and effort that is expended in order to publish books.
Worse published books are not necessarily what you had written. They may represent what your editor or your publisher likes, what is politically correct, and many other considerations.
Publishing on the web - which is what I am doing right now - means that I am in full control of the final product.
It is also easier to get my ideas across to the world on the web. I have heard of people who published their first book. They had several options - either they do self-publishing or to send it to a publisher, to pay for it and to do their own distribution. The number of copies is limited to 300 to 3000. That means that the distribution is minimal. After subtracting the copies that are distributed for free, it is really hardly worth it. Writers spend a great deal of work and not that many people read their book. Some people may buy it and still not read it. The purpose of writing in order to share your ideas - is very limited indeed.
On the other hand, web publishing means that every person who finds your article stands a reasonably good chance of beginning to read it. That's a good start.
Furthermore, potential readership is unlimited. No matter how many people click on your website, it's available for more.
Thus, I have lost nothing by preparing this material for people to read on the web. To the contrary, I have gained a great deal.
