WordFun had a posting about the different language symbols options in Windows:

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has a user-friendly access to accented letters; it involves using CTRL w/the symbol which (most nearly) resembles the accent. In all cases, the upper case is available by typing the upper case character after the CTRL intro. Exception: ß

Once you have created the document, it can be copied and pasted into Yahoo's message box or e-mail message.

áðéíóúý CTRL-apostrophe

aëïöüÿ CTRL-quotations (i.e., CTRL-SHIFT-apostrophe)

ç CTRL-comma

àèìòù CTRL-grave (i.e., CTRL-`)

âêîôû CTRL-caret (i.e., CTRL-SHIFT-6)

ãñõ CTRL-tilde (i.e., CTRL-SHIFT-grave)

¢ø CTRL-solidus (i.e., CTRL-/)

å CTRL-@ (i.e., CTRL-SHIFT-2)

æoß CTRL-ampersand (i.e., CTRL-SHIFT-7) and a or s

With a little experimentation, you can create all the characters based upon a Latin alphabet -- Icelandic, Swedish, Czech, Polish, etc.

You can get capital letters for any of these symbols in either of two ways:

ALT+keypad

One holds down the 'ALT' key and composes a 3- 4-digit code on the numeric keypad (not the numbers at the top row of your keyboard), then releases the 'ALT' key.

Examples:

ALT-130 = é

ALT-138 = è

ALT-246 = ÷

ALT-151 = ù (which is not available on many international keyboards, including French; the letter is used in only one French word "où")

Keyboad installation

If you are using PC Windows, in your control panel, there is an area referring to "languages" or "international", depending upon the version. It also offers right-to-left typing access (for Arabic or Hebrew, for example)

If you are accustomed to a qwerty keyboard, I recommend the French (Canada) installation, since the French (Europe) keyboard has many letters in different positions, based upon frequency of usage.

You can 'add' keyboards to your 'collection', and can opt for a short-cut switch to shift from one keyboard to the other.

Where do you want to go now?
