Rules of pronunciation

Students can actually reach college without knowing the basic rules in pronouncing the letters C and G. When asked to read aloud, they simply experiment with each alternative, and expect an exasperated teacher to tell them which one to use.

The poor students simply got used to not knowing how to pronounce those letters, and they accepted the fact that they would frequently pronounce them incorrectly.

They are thrilled and relieved to learn that there are rules about the pronunciation that work in most cases. When they learn to use a soft C or G before E and I, they feel some enthusiasm about reading - and about studying English.
