Vocabulary

The best thing to give students which puts them all on the same or equivalent level is vocabulary. They all have to learn specialized vocabulary for the same subject that they are studying and an initial pep talk might explain to them that the technical material in their subject is usually in English and they have to understand the importance of being part of the world community and sharing knowledge with the world or on the Internet in their particular subject area. As a result, the students realize that one important part of their English studies involves the technical vocabulary and you can tell them that at a later stage they can learn about context so that they can learn how to read things and guess without knowing everything and there’s a separate article on this in this series and about learning how to read articles relatively quickly in either English or in both English and their native language so that they know if it really pays to put in the effort to read a text in English and to get the details.
