Teachers should be taught to become independent in their own field. Thus, any teacher should be able to continue studying and become proficient in any new development in the field without assistance from an educational establishment. They should also be able to learn new curricular items without necessarily taking an inservice training course. After learning the materials by themselves, they should feel confident about teaching them to their classes.
The fact that our teacher-training establishments have not been able to accomplish this basic job is yet another sign that they have failed in their real mission.
