Were you appointed to a senior position in your school, such as the coordinator of a project? You may want to keep some things in mind.
- How many kids are in your program? How many in each class?
- How do handle larger classes?
- Are there similar programs elsewhere? What is the name of the coordinator, and phone numbers?
- Have materials been prepared for the program?
- How do you get a free teacher’s copy, teachers’ manual, web page reference, and tests?
- Will the students take standardized tests before and after the program? If so, what expectations will be faced in the beginning and end of each grade level?
- Is there a syllabus? If not, do you have to create it? Do you have other samples of syllabi on which to base yours?
- If a child gives problems with behavior or attendance, can she be removed? What is the procedure? Which problems are handled by the coordinator? The homeroom teacher? The subject teacher? The principal? The parent?
- Home visits: Can I have translators for those who are not fluent in the native language?
How can I make an appointment with someone who doesn’t speak language, can’t tell time, and doesn’t have phone?
- What does the budget allocation cover? (salaries? Photocopies? Equipment? Transparencies? Other?)
- Get the home, office, and cell phone number of the program head
- Find out the best times to call, and how late at night you can call at home
- Determine the authority and chain of command
- Who is in charge of program – your or your superior?
- Should people come to you with problems, or to your superior?
- Is it proper to bypass you?
- Can you avail yourself of costly equipment, such as projectors?
- What budget is available for small supplies?
