When your child rebels
Psychological Problems

Most rebellions are normal, but some may result from psychological problems. The onset of puberty, anxiety about new issues, and concerns about a child's future may cause him to go through a period that is more difficult than he can bear.

As a result, your adolescent child may not relate to logical explanations in the way that you would expect. This may be frustrating to both you and your child. His psychological problems may prevent him from acting in a proper manner. They may also be compounded by the fact that he has been influenced by others.

Sometimes you may be able to handle the psychological problems, but this is often not the case. Yes, you may feel that you work well with others, and that your charismatic personality can help you influence them or relate to them in a positive manner. However, this is less likely with your own child. Remember the book called Brain Surgery, Self-Taught? That works with other practitioners as well. Even the best dentist does not drill his own teeth, and often he does not drill the teeth of his loved ones. Some things are best done by others.

Your child cannot be helped by your own psychological skills - even if you are an experienced psychologist.

There is another reason why you cannot help your child: he is rebelling against you. He is exhibiting certain negative feelings and telling you that he rejects what you have to say. Your efforts to succeed with him are rather hopeless.

You may not want to offer your child psychological help because of the potential stigma that will be attached to you, your family, or your child. Although that may be a legitimate concern, the result of not offering the psychological help could lead to an even greater stigma.
