Criticize Without Being Critical

This page is still under construction.

The word criticism seems to have a negative connotation. When people talk about criticizing they all too often think about saying something that is negative.

Today the situation seems to be getting worse and most people don't realize that the criticizing could be positive as well as negative. Both of them are criticism. This leads to an unfortunate situation in which people expect to be criticized for their actions. It's a feeling that no matter what they do, no matter how hard they try, people are going to criticize them anyhow and it lowers their determination to do well.

Imagine how you would feel if no matter what you did people always told you that you're bad. Some told you that you were worse, some told you that you were less bad than others, but you never got a real pat on the back for doing something that is good no matter how hard you tried. It would lower your self-esteem and it would lessen your determination to succeed or to do well.

On the other hand, sometimes it might be interesting to try to give an unexpected compliment that would be positive criticism to somebody and watch the way they brighten as a result. You made that person's day and you've given the unique and different comment, the one that is really heard. You can take something very small that the person does and you can find a way to turn that into something that is worth complimenting and that will be sufficient for you to have made a new friend and to get action in what you want.

True, people criticize very often because they feel that there is something wrong and they want to bring it to the other person's attention. They criticize in the name of improving.

The question is whether the negative criticism will bring about more improvement than a positive criticism.
