The masters degree used to be a serious degree and people used to get it only if they wanted to make a serious advancement in their work.
Today, however, the masters is becoming a requirement for most positions that previously required only a bachelors degree or even less.
The masters degree offers a specialization in knowledge and in today's world knowledge is indeed becoming more and more specialized. People work is specific areas, whereas in the past they would know an entire field or most of what goes on in an entire field. Today people are much more limited in their knowledge and they know a whole lot about a much more specific field.
Jews have been known to go on for higher studies in the past in order to be able to advance possibly because the only field in which they could advance was that which require knowledge and they were able to study and receive this knowledge better than others. So more Jews have masters degrees than others.
