Very often people who take special courses, they might only be a one subject course, come away with a certificate. The certificate may say that they have a degree after completing the course of study or the single subject that they studied. This degree is offered to people who sign up and successfully pass the course.
It isn't really a degree but it is called a degree in some cases in order to entice people to take the course. After all, anybody who would like to have some extra letters after his name, they might be disappointed after taking the course that although he gets the degree he loses out on those important letters after the name.
