The rabbinate has two possibilities. One is that a rabbi becomes the leader of a community, in which case there is no room for advancement except for possibly salary increases or becoming involved in larger community affairs. The other possibility is to advance by moving up in places in which the rabbinate has other options such as a community rabbi, a neighborhood rabbi, a municipal rabbi, or a chief rabbi of a country. In such cases there are ways to advance most of which are associated with political ventures.
These possibilities are problematic because sometimes ideals have to be compromised for political realities.
