There are some people who have more time to sleep or more of a need to sleep and some who have less. However, in both cases the important issue is how much they feel that they have to do. Some people have more to do, some have less to do and the argument goes that if they sleep too much they won't have time to accomplish the many things that they want to accomplish.
There is some justification for that of course. There more time available the more work that you can do and you probably do accomplish much more when you are awake more and have more time to do it.
Perhaps there is a point in which you're too tired to accomplish things and you work more sluggishly so you have reach diminishing returns on your lack of sleep. In other words you've stayed up more but you've accomplished less per hour than you would have than if you would have gotten more sleep and the question is then whether it was worth it to stay up or not. This is of course debatable and it's an individual difference. Everybody is different on that.
One thing that is clear, however, is the other side to the story and that's the pleasure that you get from your work.
There's no question that work that is done while you are rested is more pleasurable and you can certainly be more enthusiastic, convincing, and excited about your work. You can help others who are arround you do their work better and you can provide a better example of good workmanship.
Perhaps that should be the factor to consider. Perhaps it is important to know how much sleep you need in order to be able to work in a way that makes you satisfied the way you go about the work. That factor should be at least as important as the absolute amount or quantity of work that you can accomplish.
In certain cases it may even be worth it to accomplish less but to do it better and to live a more satisfying and fulfilling life in that way.
These considerations are very important the next time that you want to take a siesta. Maybe it is a good idea after all.
