A simple way of deciding when to exert or put in any effort is to determine whether the results will be appreciated.
Many people put in a great deal of effort for things that they believe are right, but after all of their efforts which may or may not be crowned with success they don't have much to show for it because it is not appreciated.
A great deal of their time or even if their life may have been spent doing something which will be looked back at as a waste.
This indeed may be one way, but not the only way, to determine whether what you are doing or about to do is good or bad. If it's not going to be appreciated that does not necessarily mean that it's bad, but it's certainly one indication of such.
Thus, even though you will be doing something good, if people are not going to appreciate it or if there will be a number of people who will not appreciate it, you should think twice about it, even though you know that it is good.
Because if so, then people are just going to fight you. You will make enemies and at the end there will be a great effort that will be expended to overturn or to reverse your noble efforts.
That means that you haven't really accomplished much anyhow.
