SPRING MILL STATE PARK
Visiting Spring Mill
is a family tradition. As a child I remember us driving to Mitchell every summer.
Watching the old mill grind corn, wandering through the village, touring the caves, and walking the
trails are things that I do with my children just as my mother did
with me.
Pictured here are
the Granny White House and another log house. In the Granny White
house you will find an old loom and sometimes there is a park employee
inside weaving rugs and other items that were used during the time period.
This archway leads to
the Hamer Garden. The mill was owned by the Hamer family at one time.
The Hamer house is the largest house in the village. The house is
furnished with pieces from the Hamer era. There is also a summer kitchen
on the grounds.
In the garden you will find perrenials of many different kinds.
Hollyhocks, monarda, stachy's are just a few of the species grown here.
Several limestone benches are in this area, for visitors who are ready
to take a break and relax for a while.
For the nature lover there
are creeks and trails leading all over the park. A nice lake
for the fisherman, boats available for renting. Caves to be explored,
Donaldson cave which you can walk through. Or the Twin caves, the Twin
caves host a boat tour where the guide gives you some of the history of
the inhabitants of the village. You will even see a spot in the cave that
was used for making moonshine.
We like to take some time and walk through the old cemetary. The kids
love to wade in the creeks and we normally finish up with a stop at
the Gus Grissom Memorial in the park.
