The S.O.C. is proud to make available to you this fantastic book. We have a limited number of books that can be purchased for a reduced price of $15 per book. For every book purchased, Dave Goodrich will donate $5 to the club.
Key to the City is the first book to extensively document the history/entertainment of a major city. This initial volume contains a mixture of history, sports, films, radio, television and music-related information covering the years from 1928 - 1954. Included are more than 500 films; more than 150 plays' more than 450 songs' more than 250 records by Pittsburgh area artists; and an index of people who appeared in Pittsburgh containing more than 850 entries! The project represents thousands of hours of extensive research that provides Pittsburgh with a fact-filled foundation that is unique in scope, documentation and content.
Dave Goodrich has completed a manuscript for the years of 1955 - 1969. At the present time, we are looking for corporate sponsorship(s) to help publish this valuable manuscript.
It would be too self serving to review my own book, which is actually more of a document of Pittsburgh's remarkable entertainment history. The entire contents are based on thousands of hours of research, with little or no editorializing.
As the years roll past the dance marathons and the big-band era, my preference for R&B becomes obvious. The R&B of the 40's and 50's has faced all sorts of competition over the years in the form of psychedelic, metal, disco, punk, grunge, rap and techno, along with space-age studio technology. R&B is more than a survivor - - it leaves these other forms of music in the dust.
So much for preaching to the converted. My research also served as an important learning experience. I wasn't aware that black newspapers had attacked suggestive R&B and I wasn't aware of the number of great R&B acts to play Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas.
The most exhilarating "find" was the information on the "riot" in Cleveland in 1952, and Alan Freed's response. The term "rock and roll" is never mentioned. However, I felt justified in giving the date extensive coverage because of Pittsburgh's proximity to Cleveland, as well as its historic significance.
And yes, my book contains a glaring error. Camille Howard is not at Pittsburgh artist. A gossip column claimed she was, I should have dug deeper.
The book also contains a handy reference for who played here and when. Johnny Otis was here twice!
