PARSONS

1. JOHN-

m. ELIZABETH ______ (m.2. 12 July 1698 Peter Hinkson, living in 1720)
d. 25 Jan. 1691/2 York, ME

John was a cordwainer at Portsmouth in 1674 and may have been in Maine before that time. He was working for Nehemiah Partridge in 1677 and was also a witness against George Bramhall.

York granted him 12 acres 12 March 1677/8 under the condition that he buy the shoemaker's (John Knowlton's) house between Henry Simpson and John Preble on the northeast side of the Country Road and follow his trade. John had a tannery in 1686 probably attached to his house lot near York Corner where he carried on his business.(1)

John took the oath of allegiance to Massachusetts at York 22 March 1679/0, his Portsmouth tax being rebated in the same year. In 1681 he acknowledged judgement to Samuel Sayward payable in neat cattle.

John was killed in the Candlemas Day Massacre and the administration of his estate went four days later to Major William Vaughan then 1 Nov. 1692 to Elizabeth with William Hilton and Thomas Trafton bondsmen. The administration of his estate was finally granted to his son John 13 July 1705. The inventory of his estate was £62/17/0.(2)

In 1699 Elizabeth filed a complaint against William Hilton for taking a cow.

    m. RUTH (3) WILSON (will 11 Apr.-28 Sept. 1737 York, ME)
    d. 30 July 1730 York, ME

Elihu was a housewright and lived on Old Mill Creek in the Beech Ridge section of York having grants of land from 1703 until 1721. In 1723 the town authorities finally made a survey of what was left of the ministerial property, this was signed by Elihu along with Joseph Banks, Richard Milbury, Samuel Came and Jeremiah Moulton.(1)

The usual problem confronting towns with distinct settlements widely separated from the main village had to be met by some provision for satisfying these outlying communities and the device of a "moving school" was adopted by which the school year was divided according to population among the more important of these hamlets. In 1726 it was "Voted that the Select Men be impowered to agree with a Moving School Master on the Towns Behalf & to order his Motions." This scheme was unsatisfactory to Elihu and others from Scotland and the South Side and although the plan was adopted against their vote they registered the following protest: "The persons hereafter named enter their Dissent against the three last Votes, viz... Elihu Parson".(2)
