"21 June 1602- the will of Francis Goodwyn of Hemlyngton in the county of Norfolk, husbandman... to my wife Joan two of my best milk cows, and one young heifer, my sorrel ambling mare colt, my red ambling gelt colt, ten wethers and five ewes, one of my best skeps with bees, one shock cart with steel wheels, one good plow with the irons therto belonging with sufficient furniture and trace belonging to a plow, one pair of cart trace appertaining to a pynn or hand hoist, one chillers trace and furniture, one pair of harrows and harrowing trace and collars to them, five combs of good wheat and three combs of good barley or malt, to be taken out of my crop of corn now growing and to be delivered by my son John out of the crop, one half of all my wool, and one half the cloth that is or shall be made of this year's wool, the other half to son John... in default of their consent, to be divided at discretion of my neighbor Henry Black and William Goodwyn of Burlingham... milk neats shall remain as now they be, to be pastured... until the feast of St. Michael Archangel next... profits and produce towards maintenance of my wife, children, rest of my household and workmen, wife to have the government therof... to wife two of my best hogs, two of my best young shoats, 10 geese and a gander, six hens and a cock, six ducks and one drake, all to be kept with the rest of my swine and fouls at said farm till the feast of St. Margaret... to said wife all such stuff of household as were her own before her marriage to me, my best featherbed, my best pair of sheets, and a blanket and bolster, my best covering, etc... said Henry and William and my cousin Thomas goodwyn of Ranworth... remainder to son John except my brew and dye vessels which are to be divided betwixt them... to son John the farm now in my occupation in Hemblington and Burlyngham, and all such plows, carts, harrows and other implements not heretofore given or hereafter, also all the rest of my bees and bee skeps, four of my best work mares and geldings, my bay horse foal, three weanling calves and five milk neat... children and servants shall have such sheep and lambs which are among my sheep but are known to be their own, rest to son John... wife to have one weanling calf, son John to have one steer and one heifer now at market paying the toll due for their feed... to Peter Goodwyn my son £5 to be paid by son John in Hemblington church porch within two years... to Elias Goodwyn my son £5 within 4 years... to Frances Goodwyn my daughter £3 within five years... to Susan my daughter 20s. after age of 21... to Mary my daughter £3 at age 21... to said Susan my daughter my little brindle cow... to Margaret my daughter the wife of Robert Page my black cow known by the name of the marsh cow... to Sampson my son my young bay colt and to Elias my son my bay mare colt... to Peter my son my young gray colt... John upon reasonable request to be made at my now mansion house in Hemblinlgton within 21 days next after my decease shall become bound by obligation formal... John to pay Robert Lynes all such debts as I do owe him... to the maintencance of the parish church of Hemblington 40d., to the poor 40d.... to wife all crops upon any of my lands in Ranworth and Panxforth which I now hold in the right of my wife... rest of my goods and movables unbequeathed except armour and weapons which I give to my son John, to executors whom I ordain and make: Johan my wife, and Sampson Goodwyn my son."(1)

In her will dated 8 Feb. 1610/1 Joan Goodwyn of Raynworth, widow, asked that she be buried in Raynworth chruchyard and left: "to son Robert Lynes lands in Raynworth and Panxforth... to my son Sampson Goodwyn £20... to daughter Elizabeth £3, a red cow, ewe sheep, etc.... to daughter Susan Goodwyn £5, a calf, son Robert Lyne to keep till a young cow... to daughter Mary Goodwyn £5 and one weaned black calf... ewe sheep, etc.... to daughter Elizabeth Sadd 20s.... to Francis Downing 20s... to Sampson Goodwyn flock transom bed, blanket, sheets, cushion pillow, pillow bere, table cloth and napkins and tree pieces of pewter... to Elizabeth Lynes a feather bed... to Susan Goodwyn a bedstead... and down covering, latten candlestick... to Mary Goodwyn featherbed, feather transom, flock, etc... and a white coffer and all in it to be parted with her sister Susan except to daughter Elizabet Lynes one sheet. Residue to son Robert Lynes, he to be executor."(2)

John was a clothier in East Bergholt, Suffolk. He was evidently a very respected man as many neighbors, relatives and friends trusted him enough to leave the estates destined for minor children in his care and he was named administrator and supervisor for a number of wills including the estates of his father-in-law Steven Woodgate.

Upon his father's death Daniel was under the custody of William and Elizabeth (Lincoln) Holloway, after William's death in 1608 Elizabeth married Daniel's brother John. All of these families (Alefounder, Holloway, Chapman, Barker, Woodgate, Lincoln) lived in the area of East Bergholt, Suffolk and were clothiers and close friends. They seem to have been quite wealthy owning large amounts of property and having control of large amounts of money.

Daniel was a surveyor, an innkeeper and a large landed proprietor. He kept a public house with and without a license and at times was in court because of "disturbances" which occured at his establishment. He was in Kittery in 1652 when he signed the submission to Massachusetts. He received his lot by a town grant in 1654(1) and was a constable of Kittery 10 Dec. 1662, a Sergeant in 1659 and a grandjuryman in 1659 and 1678. On 14 July 1683 he gave his sons Thomas and James a tract of land in Berwick where he was living and on 19 March 1696/7 he deeded land to his sons William and Moses and on 21 Aug. 1701 to his son Daniel.

He was a selectman 13 Apr. 1697(2) and signed a Berwick petition 4 Sept. 1697(3), a petition to the general court of Boston 10 Dec. 1662 for aid in discharging the duties of his office in the face of local opposition to that government(4), and a petition to Oliver Cromwell in 1657. He was also one of the founders of the church in South Berwick in 1702. In Dec. 1711 he deeded the homestead to his son Thomas for support.

On 24 May 1679 his father deeded him land and a small house then occupied by Daniel Stone. He was on the grand jury in 1687 and Surveyor of highways in 1694-5 and a selectman from 1695 until 1698. Daniel signed a deposition aged 64 on 23 May 1720.(1)

"In the Name of God Amen I Daniel Goodin Senr of Berwick... Husbandman... Do make and Ordain this my Last Will and Testament... I Give and Bequeath to my Son Daniel Goodin five shillings to be paid in Bills of Credit: as also my Part of the Ten Acres of Meadow at Humphrys Pond to him and his Heirs forever.

Item I Give and Bequeath to my Son Nathanll Goodin five Shillings as Also it is my will that the Land I Bought of Nicholas & Elizabeth Turbit Shall be to him & his Heirs for ever.

Item I Give to my Son James five Shillings in Bills of Credit haveing Given him, a Cow Already reserved in My Deed of Gift to my son Thomas to be to my Dispose.

Item I Give to my Daughter Amy Goodin five Shillings to be paid in Bills of Credit.

The will was probated 12 May 1726 and the inventory was returned 19 June 1726 at £776/4/0.(2)

Thomas C. Worth, George J. Cooper, and Oliver Goodwin of Kennebunkport sold for $16 to Joseph Garland of Kennebunkport land next to George 3 July 1849. This deed was signed by Thomas C. and Olive Worth, George J. and Olive Cooper, and Oliver and Betsey Goodwin.(2)

John Goodwin of Berwick, mason, sold to Tobias Leighton of Kittery, yeoman, for £77/17 on 3 July 1741: "a Dwelling House & orchard with about Two Acres of Land... Situate in the Town of Berwick... which Land I bought of Moses Goodwin Decd." The land was bounded by Walter Abbot, deceased, the road between Kittery and the Berwick Meeting House, and by Thomas Goodwin. The deed was witnessed by Joseph Plaisted and Nathaniel Bray.(1)

Goodwin in his genealogy states that Thomas was probably the son of Daniel of Kittery although his evidence is lacking. The more recent genealogy by the Goodwin Family Association states that he was the son of James of Berwick. It seems much more likely that he was connected with the Newbury Goodwins as he and Hannah Wells were married there. There is also a question as to the parentage of Samuel & Mary Goodwin of Wells. They are placed as children of Thomas & Hannah as they were the only Goodwins who were living in Wells who could possibly be their parents however the following deed puts this relationship in doubt unless Samuel was born after 1744: "I John Wells of Wells... In Consideration of the Love I bear to Thomas Goodwin Junr A minor my grand Son the only Son of my Belovd Daughter Hannah Goodwin wife of Thomas Goodwin of said Wells, Last maker Have given... Twenty Acres of Land... in Wells... upon the northerly side of Little River... Twenty Seventh Day of Janry Anno Domini 1743/4"(1)

"I John Wells of Wells... in Consideration of the Paternal Love I bear unto my beloved Son in Law Thomas Goodwin of said Wells last Maker & to my beloved Daughtr Hannah Wife of the sd Goodwin Have given... unto them... Fourteen Acres of Land... & Salt Marsh... in Wells... below the High Way about One Rod to the Eastward of the Farm Bridge... to the North West Corner of the Barn lately Erected by the sd Thomas Goodwin near the House he now Dwells in... to the said Line between Nathl. Thomas and his family were living in Mr. Love's house when Salmon Falls was sacked by the Indians in March 1689/90. He, his wife Mehitable and their infant son were captured. Mehitable's brother James who was also captured wrote that Thomas had killed one Frenchman and wounded another in the attack and was to be tried for his life by a council of war, however he was free before his wife was released in Oct. 1695.

Thomas signed a Berwick petition for a separate township 4 Sept. 1697 and a petition asking for assistance to support the minister 3 Apr. 1698.(1)
