Slavery & Civil War |
Although there is a record of William Yancey selling a slave he had inherited from his father in law - none of his descendants appear to have been slave owners. Various of Austin Yanceys descendants were living in the north at the time of the Civil war - some being Union Soldiers. Note that most Yanceys of America were living in the South and a majority were slaveholders and joined with the Confederate forces during the Civil War |
Meredith Yancey's descendants joined with the Confederate side of the war. Alexander Yancey's descendants appear to have been on the Union side. None of Cyrus Yanceys descendants appear to have owned slaves. Note that many slaveholding families had inherited [some of ] their slaves from their parents. The fact that a family did not own slaves - often meant that their parents had not owned slaves either. |
None of Richard's descendants owned slaves. Note that many slaveholding families had inherited [some of ] their slaves from their parents. The fact that a family did not own slaves - often meant that their parents had not owned slaves either. |
None of the descendants of Charles Yancey appear to have owned slaves. All members of this branch of the family, though, seem to have given their support to the Confederate forces - many were Confederate soldiers. |
No Indication that they ever owned slaves. |
Other Notes |
Years of research has not resulted any any clear information concerning parentage of William - and little info as to his children (he most probably had children other than Austin & Fanny) Son Austin Yancey had (among others) children named Hiram, Richard, William, James. Austin was a soldier in the Rev. War - traveled to SC about 1780 & again about 1790. Was in Tennessee as early as 1797. Died in Franklin Co., Illinois 1833-1840. Daughter Fanny Yancey married Nathan Dobbs and early 1800's moved to Gwinnet Co., GA There is also a James Yancey - son of Austin - who many record as the same James Yancey found living in Gwinnett Co., GA 1830-1850 with various descendants (there is no HARD proof that this James is a son of Austin Yancey) |
Years of research has not discovered anything as to his parentage. |
Years of research has not discovered anything as to his parentage.
|
Virtually nothing is known about the parentage of Charles Yancey - nor where he came from exactly. Alfred Yancey (possible son of Charles) - married Elizabeth Dobbs [Hall Co., GA] - daughter of Nathaniel Dobbs & Frances Yancey - grandaughter of William & Sophia Yancey (there is no HARD evidence, however, that he was a son of Charles Yancey.) Another Possibly related Yancey is one William Yancey and wife Rachel found recorded on the 1850,60 census of Gwinnett Co., GA.
|
James W. Yancey - who married
Sarah Mayfield in Hall Co., GA in 1847 - is thought to be a son of
Lewis, above. On the 1850 census of Hall Co., GA it seems both James & Cyrus Yancey are
in the same dwelling # (apparently tenants of some boarding house?) (Is this Grandfather and Grandson (Cyrus & James W.?) |
Could William Yancey have been a son of Charles Yancey (III). | Could Cyrus have been a son of William & Sophia Yancey ? |
Could Richard have been a son of William & Sophia Yancey ? |
Could Charles have been a son of William & Sophia Yancey? |
Could these brothers have been children of Cyrus Yancey. |
