YANCEY, GOODLOE HARPER, business man, was born July 9, 1848, in Montgomery, son
of William Lowndes and Sarah Caroline (Earle) Yancey, (q. v.). He was educated
in the private schools of Montgomery and Coosa Counties; attended the University
of Alabama, 1861-62; University of Georgia, 1863 and 1865-66; and took a course
at Eastman's business college, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., 1866-67. During the War of
Secession he served as a private in Morgan's Kentucky cavalry, C. S. Army, and
was wounded several times. He worked for a short while as a bookkeeper in
Montgomery; was cashier of the "Atlanta Intelligiencer," Atlanta, Ga., 1867-68;
cashier, Princeton manufacturing company, Athens, Ga., 1868-72, and alderman,
Athens, Ga., 1884-96. At one time he was the owner of several Georgia
newspapers. He next engaged in planting and finally, 1899, became secretary of
the prison commission of Georgia. From 1886 to 1896 he held the office, of
lieutenant, captain, lieutenant-colonel and colonel of the 3rd Georgia volunteer
infantry regiment. He is a Democrat; Baptist; and a Knight of Pythias. Married:
(1) in September, 1872, at Athens, Ga., to Lucy Grattan, daughter of Lewis J.
and Martha (Adams) Dupree, the former a banker and planter, of Lexington, Ga.;
(2) in June, 1899, to Ruby W., daughter of Albert Mandeville, of Athens, Ga., a
northerner by birth but who served during the War of Secession in the Army of
Northern Virginia. Children: by first marriage, 1. Mary Ella; 2. William
Lowndes, m. Lillian Horan; 3. Lewis Dupree, m. Ollie Hamby; 4. Goodloe Harper, m.
Charm Oliver; 5. Lucy Grattan, m. Howell Cobb Erwin; 6. Benjamin Earle, m. Lula
Harris; by second marriage,,7. Sidney Turner; 8. Sarah Elizabeth. Residence:
