Raphoe or "Rįth Bhoth" (fort of the huts) is named after the monastery which St. Columba founded in the 6th century. It is a small country village in the County of Donegal in the Northwest of Ireland. Reputedly the second highest village in Ireland it also boasts one of the oldest schools, the Royal School having received its charter in 1618 from James I (1603-1625).
The centre of the village is "The Diamond" which has several attractive Georgian style houses as well as modern offices and shops which serve the farming community in this part of East Donegal.
Raphoe is an ideal location for the visitor to the Northwest of Ireland, as it is situated on the crossroads of the main Letterkenny to Strabane and the Londonderry to Donegal Town routes, and is within easy reach of all the major tourist attractions in Donegal.
