In August of 1996, after numerous trips back and forth to the Doctor's, CJ was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the age of 4 1/2. He spent 10 very tough days in the hospital enduring very strong chemo to help put the Leukemia into remission.

A few weeks after CJ's diagnosis, he began Kindergarten and at that point had lost all of his hair. The principal of his school gave special permission for CJ and his entire class to wear baseball hats. He spent almost 4 months going through very tough chemotherapy treatments, both inpatient & outpatient. His last inpatient treatment was in December of 1996.

CJ battled Leukemia for 2 1/2 years and finished his treatment in February of 1999. We have met some truly wonderful people during CJ's treatment, many of whom we are all still in touch with.

Thanks to the Grant-A-Wish Foundation (they send kids like CJ to baseball games, plays, amusement parks, and other fun places) CJ has been to some Baltimore Oriole games, watched "Pocohontas On Ice" play, and visited Kings Dominion! To learn more about the Grant A Wish Foundation click here.

In March of 1999, the Make A Wish Foundation sent CJ, his sister, grandmother and mom & dad to Disney World for 3 days and on the Disney Cruise Ship for 4 days. We had so much fun! To see pictures and learn more about his trip click here:

CJ and his famiy participated in the local American Cancer Society's Relay for Life for the first time June 4-5, 1999 at the Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick, MD, where CJ was chosen to represent all the Survivors at the Relay by cutting the ceremonial ribbon at the Survivors' Walk. He also has participated in the relay several times since then, both as a survivor and a team member.

CJ likes to spend time with his friends, going to the movies, playing basksetball and soccer, playing video games, running and watching TV.

He also loves participating in team sports - especially soccer & basketball. He just finished up his 5th year of basketball , and is currently in his 12th year of soccer - playing for a local club team for the past 5 years. His high school varsity soccer team won the state championship this past fall, it was very exciting to say the least.

CJ also participated in Karate with his Sister for over 5 years. He was one belt away from a Black Belt when he stopped.
