Usley Queen

1824 - 16 Feb. Rutherford Co. NC will of John Jones rec July 1825 names daughter “Usley Queen”.[32]

Washington Queen (son of Catherine Queen of Lincoln Co., NC)

1861- August 26, enlisted as private in Co. E, 34th regiment of the CSA in Lincoln Co., NC, along with his brother Berry Queen, and presumed brother Joshua Queen.  Washington was 21 at time of enlistment - born in Lincoln County, died of disease 12/4/1861. He, like Joshua, was a farmer from Gaston.[33]

1862 - is named in "An Inventory of Lincoln Co. NC Estates Files at the NC Archives".[34]

“old” William Queen - the patriarch of the Rutherford Co., NC  Queen  clan

1720 - “old William” born in VA about 1720 (age 70 in 1790, at time of the appeal of his rejected Rev. War pension claim.  See under 1790.

1753 - is listed on a land entry in Bladen Co., NC dated 14 Nov. 1753 - lived on Anderson’s Path, on a branch of Bear Creek.[35] (I haven’t been able to find the location of Anderson Path.)  Therefore had moved to NC by this date.  Bladen was the predecessor of Anson, Orange, Rowan and Cumberland counties, and at this time comprised essentially ALL of central and western NC.
- also, mentioned in a Bladen Co. land entry of John Teer, dated 27 Sept. 1753, “200 acres “near the head of a Certain Branch of Deep River, including Queen’s improvements.” [36]

1754 - witnessed deed in Anson Co. NC.[37]
N.B.: Anson Co. was created from Bladen Co. in 1750.

1754 - mentioned in a Bladen Co., NC survey book: “Surveyed for John Teer - 200 acres in Bladen Co. on a prong of Bear Creek including the place where William Queen did live - 1-19-1754.”[38]  In 1754, Bladen Co.’s western part included present-day Robeson and Moore counties.  Anson Co., formed in 1750 from Bladen, lay just west, and had no western border in 1754.  There are 23 Bear Creeks in NC today,[39] making it problematic to locate this land with certainty.  However, only one present-day Bear  Creek seems to lie in old Bladen  Co. - it rises in south Randolph Co., and flows SE into northern Moore Co., where it flows into Deep River.  This land lies just east of the present-day Montgomery County line.
16 Oct., Anson Co. deed - Edmond Lilly to John Lilly, land N side of Pee Dee.  Wm Lilly, William Queen.

1755 - Anson Co., NC deed -  “William Stone to William Queen of same, tract on Little River of Pee Dee, below mouth of Ridge Creek, where William Queen now lives.” [40]  [Little River is in present-day Montgomery Co. NC, flowing south to enter the Pee Dee River in Richmond Co.]

1761 - 11 Feb., Benjamin Roberts of Anson Co. NC, planter to WILLIAM QUEEN of same, planter, for 30 pds. proc. money...part of 200 A granted to Robt. Mills 24 Mar 1747, conveyed to Wm Stone, then to Richd Downs, then to Benjamin Roberts...on bank of Little River, adj. Stone & William Crittenden, 100 A...Benjamin Roberts (seal), Wit: Sam'l Ratliff, Wm. Jones (x) 11 Feb. 1761.[42]
The Little River is in present-day Montgomery Co.

10 Oct. - Anson Co. deed from Edmund Nicholas to John Halton on NE side of Pee Dee, witnessed by Wm. Queen, Joseph Attaway, James Goldsbe.

1763 - appears (“William Quinn”) on Anson Co. NC Tax List, with (sons?) Timothy and Henson Quinn (Queen).[43]  It appears from this list that William was a “Constable.” [44]

1764 - witnessed deed in Anson Co. NC from Samuel Parsons to Haden Morris, land on Little R., along with Matthew Raiford.[45]

1765 - William Queen of Anson Co. NC to William McConnell of Rowan Co. NC for 20 pounds, 200 acres on Nicholson’s branch of Cross Creek.  Wit.: John Smith, William Young, R. Downs, John Billing.[46]  I have been unable to locate this land, or these waterways.
- 21 April, witnessed deed from David Bruton to Wm Page on Little R., along with Wm. Holton, & Matthew Raiford.
- 1 Juuly, witnessed deed of John Carpenter of Anson to Samuel Parson of same, 100 acres on S. side of Cedar Creek, granted James Alley and sold to Carpenter, along with William Hollan, Obadi Therrell.

1767 - SOLD to William Mears 100 acres on SW side of Little River, part of 200 acres granted Robert Mills.  Wit.: John Smith Sandhill, Mary Hount.[47]

1768 - Anson Co.  William Queen SOLD to Samuel Parsons 100 acres on the bank of the Little River, including the mouth of Ridge Creek “where William Queen now lives,” granted Wm Stone in 1750, “marks of William and Margaret Queen, affixed.”   “Margaret, wife of William Queen, relinquishes rights.”  Wit.: John Curlo Smith, John Smith Sandhill.  Proved in April Court 1769 on oath of John Smith Sandhill.[48] Little River is in present-day Montgomery Co., which was formed from Anson Co. in 1779.

1769 - by this date, had sold all NC land, and moved to GA.

1773-1775 - Record of Court of Land Commissioners of Wilkes Co. GA indicate William Queen granted land, “William Queen - NC - a wife, son, and 2 daus. from 15-23 years old.  Reserved until he finds the land.” [49]  It is unclear whether this is patriarch William, or his son William Lewis Queen.

1776 - William Queen sells the Manson Co. of Georgia “deer carcasses, turkey and fowls.” [50]  His daughter Rebecca Queen Hogue and her husband Stephen Hogue were in Wilkes Co., GA, living at Macklemurrays, on a branch of the Little River, and probably her father was nearby.  There is no evidence that either family was Quaker, and in fact the Hogues were slaveholders and were Baptist.

1786 - Randolph Co. NC land Grant survey, to William Queen, 2 acres, Uwharrie River.[51]  This land lay in souhern Randolph Co., north of the land in Montgomery Co., where his clan lived 1761-769, before leaving for Georgia.  It appears that old William returned to familiar territory, before later moving west to NE Rutherford Co.

1786 - October: Hillsborough District Ejectments Order, Randolph Co., NC, against William Queen for this two-acre tract on the Uwharrie River.  A John Arnold claimed a prior patent on the tract after William had built a mill, “ with the consent and assistance of my neighbors”.  This appears to be the patriarch William (“old William”) Queen.  The petition states in part, “I William Queen, late of the county of Randolph who was formerly a resedenture (sic) of the state of Georgia an din the time of the war with Grate Britane (sic), was plundered of all my proberty by the Torys and was wounded and obliged to leave that country for fear of the enemy, and so redus’d to a state of poverty and near seventy years of age and not able to work for  my living, I concluded to build me a mill on the Uwharrie River....”
In 1787, the NC General Assembly Session Records, Nov. Session contain his petition.
He evidently did not prevail, and subsequently moved west to NE Rutherford Co.  See below.

1788 - 20 Oct., William Whiteside of Rutherford Co. to William Queen “late of Randolph Co. NC”, a tract of land on Ward’s Creek originally granted to Robert Collingwood.[52]  It isn’t clear if this is old William, or his son William Lewis, but it appears to be the latter, because old William is still in Randolph Co. in 1793 (see below).  However, though dated 10-20-1788, this deed isn’t recorded until 26 Sept. 1793.
Maisie Queen Young believes that this is patriarch William, and that this indicates that he got 300 pounds for his mill in Randolph Co. on the Uwharrie River.

1788 - William Queen is bondsman on the Feb. 21, 1788 marriage bond for Samuel Queen and Dicey Rolls; the witness is William Goings.

1790 - files an appeal of his apparently rejected claim for reimbursement of losses in the Rev. War.  In this claim (made about 1790), he stated that he had been “plundered of all his property, wounded and made a cripple by the Tories, and was obliged to leave Georgia.” [53]

14 Sept., 1790 - Anson Co. deed from John Smith to William Smith, both of Anson Co., for 25 pds. 100 acres on the Little River of Pee Dee, granted to said John Smith Dec. 5, 1760.  Wit.: Richard Downs, Wm Queen, Margaret Queen.[54]  Patriarch William is back in NC from Georgia.

1793 - 5 Oct. 1793, William Queen “of Randolph Co.” gives power of attorney to “my son and trusty  friend William Lewis Queen,” witnessed by Samuel Carpenter, James Chitwood.[55]

1794 – April 11.  William Queen, Junr., agent and attorney for William Queen, Senr., (sells) to Jacob Prilhart, each of RCNC, (for) 75£, 200 acres on the west side of Wards Creek, first granted to Robt. Collingwood.  Wit. Robert H. Taylor, Peter Woodward.  #69, 6 January 1806.[56]
- April 11.  William Queen, Jnr., agent and attorney for William Queen, Senr. of RCNC to Jacob Prilhart of same, 75£, 150 acres including the crossroads and the improvements whereon he now lives joining Collingwood, granted to William Going 9 August 1780.  Wit. Robert H. Taylor, Peter Woodward.  #70, 6 January 1806.[57]

1798 - March - Rutherford Co. bill of sale from William Queen to Stephen Hougue (his son-in-law): 1 mare, 6 plates, 3 dishes, 3 basins. Wit.: David Forbes, William Hougue.[58]

1799 - Rutherford County, North Carolina Deed Bk 15-17, 204: 2 Feb. 1799, Peter Watson to William Queen, Sr., 50 acres on First Broad River.

1800 - the Rutherford Co., NC federal census, p. 138, has the following Queens: John Queen, age 16-26 - 10100-20100 [son of old Wm?  Thomas Queen b. 1745 also had a son named John, b. 1774[59]].)   William Queen, age 45 and older, with wife of similar age {00001-00001-00]; Samuel Queen, age 26-45, with wife and 6 children; William Queen, age 45 or over, with wife 26-45 and 11 children or young adults; Meredith Queen, age 16-25 with wife and two daughters 0-9; Timothy Queen, age 45 or older, with wife and 3 children or young adults; and Timothy Queen, Jr., age 26-45, with wife and two children.[60],[61]

1801 - “old” William Queen said to have died, and to have been buried in the Golden Valley area in NE Rutherford Co., NC.[62]
- letters of administration granted to Stephen Hogue on the estate of Wm Queen, dec’d, Rutherford Co., NC April Court, 1801. (Hogue was husband of Wm’s daughter Rebecca Queen).[63]
He may be buried in the Hogue family cemetery. This cemetery is located in the Golden Valley section of Rutherford County about 3 miles west of the First Broad Baptist Church. It is situated on the northwest side of Highway # 226 about 2/10 mile off the highway, and the plot contains some 12 to 15 graves, with only 2 of them marked.  Since Rebecca and husband Stephen were granted letters of administration for his estate, he was probably living near them or with them.  And both Rebecca and Stephen Hogue are buried there; theirs are the only two graves that are marked in this cemetery.

[29] Jerry Dyer favors the latter ancestry; he writes (2/28/02): “Attached land survey is for TOBIAS QUEEN, note it is in 1827!  He had to be of age to buy land.  Land is in a horse shoe shape around MOSES Queen's land.  I feel this (Tobias)  is a son of Moses Queen (b. c. 1770-75)son of WLQ, Sr.  I know I wouldn't let just some distant relative encircle my property like that!  Anyway, point is that this is where I feel another son of Moses (my viewpoint) named SOLOMON, got the name for his son, Tobias, born in 1840's. You might
already have this data, but my interpretation of it's significance is different.  Why he was never listed in any of the census records is beyond me.  Maybe he just lived there, never married, etc.  Moses always gave census recorders the same group of children - four males, two females - this even after they had married and moved away.”
