Hall of Fame Watch
The 1999 National Baseball Hall of Fame votes are in and my namesake, Dale Murphy, did not make it in this year. *HISS* I do want to congratulate this year's class: Nolan Ryan, George Brett, and Robin Yount. Dale brought in 96 votes this year which is quite a ways off from the 75% he needs to get in the Hall. Although we are disappointed, we are not losing hope! This is the page we will use for our own personal appeals and debate as to why Dale should receive stronger consideration in 2000 (and beyond if needed). There have been some great quotes since the voting that we would like to share with you. If you have anything else you'd like for us to add to this page, let us know! GO MURPH in 2000!! *meow*
"Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played."
-The explanation of voting for the Hall of Fame candidates as reported on the National Baseball Hall of Fame's website.
"I always figured Dale Murphy, whose statistics are admittedly borderline by Hall of Fame standards, would eventually make it to Cooperstown. But his meager 19 percent of the vote this year raises the real possibility he'll never reach the necessary 75 percent. Which would be Cooperstown's loss."
-Tim Tucker in the Atlanta Constitution (1/7/99)
