  7. I have been researching my 5th great grandmother with some success but not what I had hoped for. Mary McCracken Wisely Welch was first found on board the schooner, The Seven Friends, which left somewhere in Ireland and arrived in St. John, New Brunswick, in July, 1819. She was with her family, father James, and 5 others (not sure if any of the other 5 were her mother - the ship's manifest just lists James as head of household with 7 in the family). On board the same ship was the Samuel Wisely family with 7 members. It is believed by our family that Mary married Samuel (the son of the father named on the manifest) either on board ship or in St. John. We don't have any documentation of this.

  10. Good idea to share brickwalls.
Mine is the military service of Robert C. Shipman (a McCracken). I have a picture of him in WW1 uniform of the cavalry. He was a border guard on the Mexican border 1917-1918 near Nogales and Douglas AZ. I don't know where he enlisted. I have been to the NARA website but I don't have enough information about him to gather more information from there. He may have been involved in the skirmishes with Pancho Villa in 1915/16 or the Punitive Expedition under Gen. John Pershing.
Other brickwall is William Kelsey McCracken b. 1874 married Margaret Elizabeth Gill in 1898. Died about 1908 or 09. Probably in Laurel county KY. But I haven't been able to locate death certificate or obit.
    Any clues welcome.

  30. Hello, I'm searching for ANY information that I might can find on Cary A. McCracken. He was born around 1850, his death certificate states he was born in Longview, Texas but others family members say he he was from the lower part of Illinois around Missouri.. He died on April 9, 1934 in Hunt County Texas and is buried in Weaver Cemetery in Kaufman County, Texas. I've been able to trace him back to 1871 when he married Martha Ann Sparks. She was from the Montgomery/Jones families of Missouri and Texas. Cary's first son, William, was born in 1872. Maybe that could be Cary's fathers name. Thank you for your time.

    • There's a McCracken feed mill in Lancaster County, PA. I believe it's in the town of Manheim, PA.Just a chance at a shot in the dark. Fred in PA.
    • Though I know the McCrackens are of the MacNaughten Clan, I recently heard we also have some McCrackens in the McLean Clan.
    • Right now, my only brickwall is my former husband, from whom I got the name McCracken. He says he does not remember the name of his grandparents!
    • There was a famous opera singer name of James McCracken, and he was black!
    • There was also a murderer McCracken who died in the electric chair about 30 years ago. Not to worry, we all have some rogues and thieves and such in some of our ancestry.
    • Dear sir,
This may be of interest for your snippets.
I am not a McCracken but I do know that one of Australia's most famous Australian Rules Football clubs, Essendon, was founded in Melbourne by the McCracken family from Girvan in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1873.
Robert and Peter McCracken had left ' the old country' for Australia on board the Nimrod , arriving in Melbourne in January 1841 to eventually become very wealthy brewers during the gold rushes.
The club's colours of red and black are the same as the castle on the McCracken family crest.
Essendon share with one other club the most number of premierships.
If it seems strange that Scots should be involved with Australian Rules football it should be noted that Australia football was first played in 1858 before senior rugby competition and before soccer and Scots were very prominent in the games beginnings in Melbourne in the late 1850s.
I researched this information for my book titled 'Football's Forgotten Tour' ISBN 0 9581018 0 9).
      Yours sincerely
      John Williamson
