  90. Just over a year ago, you added my John McLean onto the Missing McLean list - record no. 90. I've got one step further and also changed my e-mail address so wondered if it is possible to update this notice? 1) My great-grandfather, John McLean, a journalist, was born 1838/39 in Dundee. He married Anna Maria Lamb of Newcastle in January 1864 and they had five children - Jane Rogers 1864; Anna Maria 1870; Agnes 1873; William 1874; and Robert McGregor 1878 - all born Darlington. 2) John's father, also John, was born 1812 in Rosshire and he died in April 1889 in Leith. He was a mechanical engineer/machine finisher/blacksmith/journeyman. He married Mary McGregor in Perth in August 1835. They lived in Kirkaldy and had six children - Susan (Susannah?) 1836 Dundee; John (above) 1838/39 Dundee; William 1841 Dundee; Mary 1844 Cupar; Christian (May/Mary?) 1848 Kirkaldy; and Richardson 1851 Kirkaldy. 3) It is possible this John's father was yet another John who married Mary Campbell. 286. I am trying to find out more about my grandmother's family, the McLEANS of Clackmannan, Scotland. Her name was Mary McLEAN and she was born in about 1915. The information I have is very sketchy as she was apparently raised by her cousins, the Frews in Alloa (I am told she was born to unmarried parents - a disgrace in those days I believe - the McLEANS of Clackmannan were never on speaking terms with her). I know from my Grandfather's marriage certificate that her father was a Joiner by the name of William McLEAN. Her mother was called Bella FREW. My granmother was quite tall - 5 feet 10 inches and had striking green eyes.
I do not have any dates of birth etc. either, will try and contact my father who lives in South Africa to see if he has any further information.
My grandmother married my grandfather (Rev William Robert COX - an Irish priest) in 1940 and they both served in the British army, she as a nurse. She died when my father was 18 years old from cancer. I have a 20 year old letter written to my father by my grandmother's cousin in Aloa, on the back of the letter there is a note that says "Australia", am not sure what that refers to!
    Kind regards

  397. I just found this website and I'm overwhelmed that there's actually a list for lost Macleans!!! I'm a lost Maclean myself. My sister Sherylnne-Anne and brother Malcolm-Dean are also. Sherylnne's last name is spelt Mclean, but mine and my brothers are Maclean. Our father doesn't care but his whole name is Ian Wallace Maclean (a.k.a Kina Maclean). He was born and bred in Waipu with his family but broke contact with them many moons ago. I know he has/had a sister called Anne and I'm pretty sure there were six siblings including himself. My brother is 49, Sheryl about 45 and I'm 27. I don't think it worries those two either way and I don't blame them really, but I'd like to make contact with some of my own family if I could. I met a man we called Uncle Jim who was our fathers' true relative yet I think he was a Carroll. But I know my father was treated poorly as a child growing up on a farm in Waipu somewhere with his parents, but he loved his mum, despised his father and was out on his ear around 11 - 12 years old to make way for a new baby on the way.
If you or someone out there could assist me further as for nearly fifty years our father has refused to take any of us near his family due to his childhood but that isn't something we need to carry with us too, I would be grateful for any assistance. .

  413. My Neil McLean was born around 1855. He married Louisa Lear in 1881 at Balmoral Vic Australia. He died at the same place in 1884. He had 3 sons, William Dugard, Robert and Neil (born after his father died) On Neil and Louisa’s marriage registration it lists Inverness as his birthplace and Dugald McLean and Margaret Taylor as his parents. On his death registration the birthplace is listed as Isle of Coll and on his sons birth registration Neil’s birthplace is listed as Inverness-shire. I haven’t found out when he came to Australia yet but it seems he arrived in South Australia first.
Hope someone can help solve some of these mysteries.

  429. I am researching the McLean surname. For a few years now, I have been trying to establish the identity of my paternal great grandfather.
My paternal grandfather was adopted as a baby and took the name of his adoptive parents (Jamieson). I recently had what I hope is a breakthrough, when I got an exact YDNA match with Don McLean in Victoria, which obviously suggests I may be a McLean.
Don, like you, is a descendant of Duncan McLean (b 1742 Little Dunkeld) but through his son Duncan, rather than through Alexander.
Thanks to your excellent source data, I have been able to get lots of information on Alexanders descendants (many thanks !) but not so much on Duncans descendants. Duncan was born 15/11/1772 also in Little Dunkeld and I know that he had at least 2 sons - John (1796) and James (1798). They in turn had 6 sons each - John married Catherine McEwan and their sons were Duncan (1824) John (1825) Thomas (1831) Alexander (1833) James (1835) and William (1841). James married Elizabeth McDonald and their sons were Duncan (1828) Donald (1832) John (1834) James (1838) Peter (1840) William (1846)
Unfortunately, this is as far as I am able to get.
In order to work out whom my great grandfather might have been I need to get a picture of all the male McLeans born around the 1860's/1870's (likely to be sons of the above).
Of course, even though I match YDNA with Don McLean it is possible that my great grandfather, like you, came through Alexanders line or indeed I believe the original Duncan also had a 3rd son John (b. 3/6/1768) so it could have been through him.
You will appreciate it is a bit of a "needle in a haystack" at the moment. Any help/information you could give me would be much appreciated.
Alternatively, maybe I could ask you to post the following request on your Missing McLeans link - many thanks “Looking for information on all descendants of Duncan McLean (b 1742 in Little Dunkeld) and Isobel Menzies, particularly descendants of their son Duncan McLean (b 15/11/1772 in Little Dunkeld) Duncan had at least two sons - John (b 1796) and James (b 1798) who had at least 6 sons each. Looking for information on any other sons and all of their descendants.

  430. My name is Denise and I am a Mclean by birth. I was born in Stamford Ct., Fairfield County.
I know almost nothing about my relatives for my father was much older than my mother and his side of the family wanted nothing to do with us upon his death so we left the state.
For several years, I have been curious about that side as I to have children and would like them to know their heritage as well. My fathers Name was Edward F. McLean who was born in 1911, but social security has him listed as dob 1912 his dod is Oct. 1975, he had a sister named Evelyn who is older, and one I think that is named Elizabeth younger. Everyone called her Babe, because their mother mothers name was Elizabeth, their father was William.
I am not sure when William died, but their mother died between 1965 and 1970. Could we be of the same clan? I am not sure, but if we are, I hope this helps I know it will me. If I can be of any other assistance please let me know. Please mail me back and let me know what you discover.

  434. Hi
I am at a loss to find my McLean (McLaine) ancestors!

    Helen (b 1821)
    Mary (b 1826)
    Catherine (b1829) my ggggrandmother
    Neil (b 1831)
    John (b 1833)

Searching for ancestors of Hector McLEAN b. 1791 in Croy & Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland.

  446. G'day Doug, I was “trolling" the net when I came across your pages.
I have been doing some on-line research on our family tree, and hope that we may possibly have some common ancestors.
My (maternal) great, great, grandfather was an ALEXANDER McCLEAN. With my limited amount of expertise in this venture, I have been able to discover that he married ISABELLA McCALLUM on 19 November 1847 and had a daughter (my great grandmother) MARGARET on 17 November 1850.
It appears from the census of 1851, that he was a police sergeant in the parish of Dalkeith. This census also lists his age as 33, so he was probably born around 1818.
I hope that this information may tie in with yours or other researchers and may assist me with my endeavors’

  447. Hi, Doug,
I have recently turned up some McLeans on remote branches of my Menzies tree. Perhaps these will be of some help to others?
Mary Ann Menzies, b 1849 in Perth, daughter of Robert Menzies and Elizabeth Robertson, married John McLean in Perth in 1870.
Robert Menzies was the son of my great-great-grandparents, Robert Menzies, wright, and Helen (Nellie) Soutar in Perth. His sister, Christian, was my great-grandmother.
Elizabeth Robertson was the daughter of Alexander Robertson and Ann Barty.
Mary Ann and John McLean had: Grace Ann Robertson Barty McLean, April 1870; Peter, 1872; John, 1874; Daniel Mathews, about 1877; William, about 1879; Robert Andrew, about 1880.
As you can see, their naming pattern was a little arbitrary. I don't know what happened to any of these children.

Moved to Junee area of NSW and married Elizabeth Bevan in Dec 1861 and died in 1896. I have a large amount of information on my arm of the McLean clan but by no means all of it. I am still searching and trying to contact family members/descendants of Archibald McLean and am quite happy to pass on what I have
. He and his descendants would be one of your 'missing links' for your web page for descendants of Peter McLean (Duncan??) and Alexander McLean.
I am currently building a web page and will send link when done. Will place with your permission a link to your site on web page.

  455. Hi Doug, Are you interested in any USA or Ireland connections to the McLean’s of Duart?
According to another relative, I have an ancestor William McLean who either immigrated to Londonderry, Ireland in the early 1700s and was born in 1702 and then immigrated to Pennsylvania USA with wife and sons and perhaps brothers. Would you have any information about this or could you direct me to someone else?

  456. Hi Doug,
    Re Harriet Hornby
I found your posting on Rootsweb about Harriet Hornby. I think Harriet was a younger sister to my three times Great Grandfather's first wife Elizabeth Hornby. His name was John Hindley Austin Lowe and he married Elizabeth in Liverpool in 1851. In the 1841 census Elizabeth has a sister called Harriet Hornby born 1839 also Father James, Mother Elizabeth, brothers James and William and sisters Mary, Hannah and Harriet so I think we have a match. John and Elizabeth immigrated to Melbourne in 1853 then in 1859 they moved to Nelson where Elizabeth died of Typhoid. John then moved to Auckland where he married Margaret Craig I am descended from this marriage. When John died they sent a copy of his death to the Melbourne papers I always thought he must have family still in Vic. I wonder if it was the Hornby side. I see in the 1851 census that Harriet, James, Mary and William are all boarding together in Everton, Liverpool. James is listed as a seaman maybe he bought Harriet out to Australia.
I would be interested in hearing from you as John Hindley Austin Lowe is a favorite of mine.

  458. Hello in Aussie, I noticed in my search re the Mclean family, that you are also searching the same name. Could it be that we are searching the same family. My Great Grandparent’s came from Glasgow Scotland around about the year 1860. The Mclean family I am searching would be Neal Mclean and Emma McLean. I know that their daughter Mary Mclean worked as a nursemaid in the Ballaratt Goldfields, which Mary is my Grandmother. It just seems so difficult trying to trace our Ancestors, and I feel it is not fair,as the are our kinfolk. Any ideas to help would be very well appreciated. I am Aussie also, I do have a lot of information regarding my Grandmother Mary Mclean, but I can not trace if Mary, came with her parents as emigrant's or that she emigrated by herself. It could be possible that if she did emigrate with her parent; to Victoria Australia, there could be other family members, of the Mclean family. Hope that we can both be assistance to each other Thank you kind regards Joy Desjardins

He was born sometime around 1962 in Tasmania, but other than that, we cannot seem to find any information on him.
We believe his middle name is Joseph and he may have a father in Tasmania and a mother in Queensland

    "McLEAN TRIVIA"
Under Construction "A collection of trivia contributed and extracted from various websites"- contributions welcome - Contact :-Webmaster.

    1. Motto: “Virtue Mine Honor” is a clan slogan for one of Scotland’s oldest clans, the clan MacLean. Translated from the Gaelic “Is í an tsuáilce mo ghradam”, it literally means “virtue is the mark of my honour”.

    2. The name MacLean is rendered in gaelic "MacGille Eoin" or "son of the servant of St. John". The clan claims its descent from "Gilleathan Na Tuaidh", of the royal house of Lorn. The Duart branch of the clan claim as their progenitor Lachlan Lubanach, son of Iain Dhu MacLean of Mull, and a direct descendent of Gillean.

    3. One of my favorites is the Wilmer McLean home in Appomatox, Virginia, where Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Head of the Union Army, accepted the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Head of the Confederate Army, on April 9, 1965. The trivia not widely known is that McLean moved there from Prince William County, Va. where the battle of Bull Run had been fought in the early part of the war and his home damaged.
It could be said that the war began and ended on Wilmer McLean's properties. Although I don't know his background, I have visited Appomatox where the surrender was signed in McLean's parlor. He later lost that home due to financial issues and it is now a National Park.
      Regards
      Barbara McLean
      Murrieta, CA

    4. Gillean of the Battleaxe
The founder of the clan was a Scots warlord descended from the royal House of Loarn named Gilleain na Tuaighe ("Gillean (pronounced Gillane not Gill-ee-un) of the Battleaxe", who lived circa (1174-1249). The stories of Gillean being descended from the Fitzgeralds is fictitious, as the Fitzgeralds were of Irish-Norman descent and the Macleans were of Gaelic descent, having been in Scotland since the Dalriadic immigration from Ulster in 503 AD. Gillean's great-grandfather was Old Dugald of Scone, born ca. 1050 during the reign of King Macbeth. He was a Judex (judge) and Councillor to King David of Scots.
Gillean's great-great-grandson settled in Mull and by 1390, Donald, Lord of the Isles gave land to his two brothers-in-law, thus starting the two main branches of the clan: Maclean of Duart and Maclaine of Lochbuie (both on the island of Mull where the name is still frequently found).

    5. BABIES
Three men are in the maternity ward of a hospital, awaiting the imminent birth of their respective children. One is an Englishman, one a Scotsman, and the other a Jamaican. They are all very nervous and pacing the floor. Suddenly, the doctor bursts through the double doors saying, "Gentlemen, you won't believe this, but your wives have all had their babies within five minutes of each other." The men are beside themselves with happiness and joy.
"And," said the doctor, "They have all had little boys." The fathers are ecstatic and congratulate each other over and over.
"However, we do have one slight problem," the doctor said. "In all the confusion, we may have mixed up the babies getting them to the nursery and would be grateful if you could join us there to try and help identify them."
With that the Scotsman raced past the doctor and bolted to the nursery. Once inside he picked up a dark skinned infant with dreadlocks saying, "There's no doubt about it, this boy is mine!"
The doctor looked bewildered and said, "Well, sir, of all the babies I would have thought that maybe this child could be of Jamaican descent."
"True," said the Scotsman, "but one of the other two is English and I'm not taking the risk."

    6. Funnily enough, celebrating Christmas in September might be nearer the mark than we realise. The only reason that we celebrate in December, is because the early missionaries soon learnt that the pagans that had been converted, still insisted on celebrating the winter solstice and nothing would stop them. So, the missionaries 'converted' the pagan festival into a Christian one (though we still use a lot of the pagan symbols for the Christian festival). There are scholars who believe that the birth of Jesus actually took place in September. So, let's go for it! Peace and goodwill towards all men.
As far as I understand, the Scots only started marking Christmas about 100 years ago. It was business as usual unless December 25 happened to fall on a Sunday. [being mostly staunch Calvinists, they weren't too keen on pagan festivals. They kept their time for fun and games for Hogmanay!]
      Lyndall

    7. Hogmanay Traditional Celebrations
Historians believe that we inherited the celebration from the Vikings who, coming from even further north than ourselves, paid even more attention to the passing of the shortest day. In Shetland, where the Viking influence was strongest, New Year is called Yules, from the Scandinavian word.
It may not be widely known but Christmas was not celebrated as a festival and virtually banned in Scotland for around 400 years, from the end of the 17th century to the 1950s. The reason for this has its roots in the Protestant Reformation when the Kirk portrayed Christmas as a Popish or Catholic feast and therefore had to be banned. Many Scots had to work over Christmas and their winter solstice holiday was therefore at New Year when family and friends gathered for a party and exchange presents, especially for the children, which came to be called hogmanay.

    8. And here are two toasts for the start of the meal (both written by Robert Burns):

Some hae meat, and canna eat, And some wad eat that want it; But we hae meat, and we can eat - And sae the Lord be thankit.

O Thou who kindly dost provide For every creature's want! We bless Thee, God of Nature wide, For all thy goodness lent. And, if it please Thee, heavenly Guide, May never worse be sent; But, whether granted or denied, Lord bless us with content.

And here is another Burns toast, this time for after a meal:

O Thou, in whom we live and move, Who made the sea and shore; Thy goodness constantly we prove, And grateful would adore; And, if it please Thee, Power above! Still grant us with such store The friend we trust, the fair we love, And we desire no more.

    9. Scottish Naming Pattern

First son is named for the Father's Father.
Second son is named for the Mother's Father.
Third son is named for the Father's Father's Father.
Fourth son is named for the Mother's Mother's Father.
Fifth son is named for the Father's Mother's Father.
Sixth son is named for the Mother's Father's Father.
Seventh through Tenth sons are named for the Father's Great-Grandfathers.
Tenth through Fourteenth sons for the Mother's Great-Grandfathers.

First daughter is named for the Mother's Mother.
Second daughter is named for the Father's Mother.
Third daughter is named for the Mother's Father's Mother.
Fourth daughter is named for the Father's Father's Mother.
Fifth daughter is named for the Mother's Mother's Mother.
Sixth daughter is named for the Father's Mother's Mother.
Seventh through tenth daughters are named for the Mother's Great-Grandmothers.
Tenth through fourteenth daughters for the Father's Great-Grandmothers.

      NOTES:

In some cases you will find that the order is reversed with the first and second children, i.e. the first-born son being named after the mother's father and the second-born son after the father's father. If this is the case then the daughters are also usually reversed.

You will also find instances where a child is named 'out of pattern', after an aunt or uncle who has died, or after an admired other relative or friend of the parent.

If a child dies in infancy, his or her name is often given to a subsequent child - a natural consequence of the high birth rate and infant mortality rates of past times.

These are only general guidelines and were certainly not always followed.

    10. Saints Preserve Us!
Legend tells us that a Scottish queen was given a ring by her husband. But she gave it to a handsome soldier and the king found out. He came across the soldier asleep by a river bank, took the ring, threw it in the water and challenged his wife to produce the ring. St Mungo, who was to become the patron saint of Glasgow, miraculously returned the ring by catching the right salmon and finding it in its stomach. The arms of the City of Glasgow now include a salmon with a ring in its mouth

    11. I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's son
I'm only plucking pheasants 'till the pheasant plucker comes.

Me husband is a keeper, he's a very busy man
I try to understand him and I help him all I can,
But sometimes in an evening I feel a trifle dim
All alone, I'm plucking pheasants, when I'd rather pluck with him.

      I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mate
I'm only plucking pheasants 'cos the pheasant plucker's late !

I'm not good at plucking pheasants, at pheasant plucking I get stuck
Though some pheasants find it pleasant I'd rather pluck a duck.
Oh plucking geese is gorgeous, I can pluck a goose with ease
But pheasant plucking's torture because they haven't any grease.

I'm not a pheasant plucker, he has gone out on the tiles
He only plucked one pheasant and I'm sitting here with piles !

You have to pluck them fresh, if it’s fresh they’re not unpleasant,
I knew a man in Dunstable who could pluck a frozen pheasant.
They say the village constable had pheasant plucking sessions
With the vicar on a Sunday ‘tween the first and second lessons.

      I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mum
I'm only plucking pheasants 'till the pheasant plucker's come.

My good friend Godfrey is most adept, he's really got the knack
He likes to have a pheasant plucked before he hits the sack.
I like to give a helping hand, I gather up the feathers,
It's really all our pheasant plucking keeps us pair together.

      I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's friend
I'm only plucking pheasants as a means unto an end !

My husband's in the forest always banging with his gun
If he could hear me half the time I'm sure that he would run,
For there's fluff in all my crannies, there's feathers up my nose
And I'm itching in the kitchen from my head down to my toes.

      I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's wife
And when we pluck together it's a pheasant plucking life !
