John L. Austin was born in Alexander County and resided there prior to enlisting at the age of 25 on August 8, 1862. He died in a hospital in Richmond of typhoid fever on May 22, 1863. Private Austin is buried in the Oak Wood Military Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.
