Thomas E. Blankenship was born in York District, South Carolina, and at the age of 24, resided in Mecklenburg County as a farmer prior to enlisting in Company I on October 22, 1861. He was wounded in the back and captured at Hanover Court House on May 27, 1862. First hospitalized at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, he was transferred on September 19, 1862, to Fort Columbus, New York, where he died of "phthisis pulmonalis" on September 23, 1862. Private Blankenship is buried in the Cypress Hill Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
