Henry S. H. Baker resided in Alexander County and enlisted in Company E in Iredell County at the age of 23 on August 15, 1862. He was wounded in the foot and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 3, 1863. His foot was amputated and he was hospitalized at Chester, Pennsylvania, where he died on August 1, 1863, of "mortification of the stump after amputation." Private Baker is buried in the Philadelphia National Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
