Levi Carpenter resided in Gaston County and enlisted in Iredell County in Company I on August 15, 1862. He was 32 years old. He was captured at or near Gravel Hill on July 28/30, 1864, and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. On August 8, 1864, he was transferred to Elmira, New York, where he died on March 1 or May 9, 1865, of chronic diarrhea. Private Carpenter is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York.
