Thomas A. Cable resided in Watauga County where he enlisted in Company E at the age of 21 on September 18, 1861. His hearing was destroyed by a shell during the battle of 2nd Manassas (August 29, 1862). He returned to duty in November - December, 1862, and was present until retired to the Invalid Corps on September 28, 1864. Private Cable is buried in the Cable Cemetery in Watauga County, North Carolina.
