The "Alleghany Tigers" were raised in Alleghany County and enlisted there on September 15, 1861. They were mustered into service of the state on November 20, 1861, and assigned to the 37th Regiment of North Carolina Troops as Company K. Their first captain was 43 year old John Ross.
