"Mecklenburg’s Wide Awakes" were raised in Mecklenburg County and enlisted on September 16, 1861. On November 20, 1861, they were mustered into state service and assigned to the 37th Regiment of North Carolina Troops as Company C. Their first captain was 21 year old James Monroe Potts.
