Enlisting in Dallas on October 6, 1861 were the "Gaston Blues." The "Blues" were mustered into state service on November 20, 1861, and assigned to the 37th Regiment of North Carolina Troops as Company H. Their first captain was William Rufus Rakin, who was 38 years old.
