The Divinity of the Holy Spirit
All Scripture references will be
quoted from the King James Version of the Bible, unless
otherwise noted.
In order to receive the blessings
of and have the indwelling and outpouring of the third
part of the Triunity Godhead a.k.a. The Holy Spirit, we
must understand that He is as divine as the other two
parts of the Godhead a.k.a. God The Father and God The
Son. We must understand that God The Father, God The Son,
and God The Holy Spirit are separate beings yet one in
thought and power; hence the reference to God as the Triunity
instead of the more common reference the Trinity.
Although the word Trinity is appropriate and accurate in
reference to the Godhead, it is used to infer clarity of
the Scriptures.
Some facts about the
divinity of the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit has existed since
the beginning.
Gen 1:2 says, "And the earth
was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the
face of the deep. And the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit)
moved upon the face of the waters." This is the
story of the creation of the earth that is now.
Hebrew 9:14 says, "How much
more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit, offered himself without spot to God,...."
Notice too that the Triunity Godhead is reffered to here
as well.
The Holy Spirit is separate yet
equal in divinity with The Father and The Son.
Matthew 28:19 says, "Go ye
therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them all in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost (Spirit)."
John 16:5-7 says, "But now I
go my way to him that hath sent me (God the Father); and
none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I
have said theses things unto to you, sorrow hath filled
your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is
expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away,
the Comforter (Holy Spirit) will not come unto you; but
if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Acts 5:3-4 says, "But Peter
said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie
to the Holy Ghost (Spirit), and to keep back part of the
price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine
own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own
power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart?
thou hast not lied unto men. but unto God." Here the
Holy Spirit is referred to as God.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 says,
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that
the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) dwelleth in you? If any
man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy: for
the temple Of God is holy, which temple are ye?"
Here we as believers are referred to as the temple of God
with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says,
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of
the Holy Ghost (Spirit) which is in you, which ye have of
God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a
price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your
spirit, which are God's." Here we as believers are
referred to as the temple of the Holy Spirit which dwells
in us. The price that we were bought with is the death
and resurection of Jesus... He paid the price with His
blood.
1 Corinthians 12:1-11 says,
"Now concerning spiritual gifts, bretheren, I would
not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles,
carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking
by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no
man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost
(Spirit). Now there are diversities of gifts, but the
same Spirit. And there are differences of
administrations, but the same Lord. And there are
diversities of operations, but it is the same God which
worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit
is given to every man to profit withal....But all these
worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to
every man severally as he will." Here we see that
the Holy Spirit is one although He disperses different
gifts. It is by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that
the we as believers are able to confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord. By receiving the gifts of the Spirit we as
believers are empowered to fulfill the purpose of God's
plan by outpouring our indwelling Holy Spirit to the rest
of the world, thus continuing the "Great
Commission" that was given to all believers in Mark
16:15-18.
2 Corinthians 13:14 says,
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of
God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost (Spirit) be with
you all. Amen."
Ephesians 4:4-6 says, "There
is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one
hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through
all, and in you." One body here refers to the
church; one Spirit refers to The Holy Spirit; one Lord is
Jesus Christ: one God ,the Father of all. Remember that
God the Father is the head of Christ (1
Corinthians 11:3) and that it is through
them both that the Holy Spirit came.
1 John 5:7 says, "For there
are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the
Word [Jesus], and the Holy Ghost [Spirit]: and these
three are one." How can three be one you say? Is
this some new kind of math? No, because three can be one
in unity. Just as when people marry two become one flesh;
they are not litterally one flesh they are of one accord.
Although I know that there are
many more references pertaining to the Divinty of the
Holy Spirit, I hope that you find these few Scriptural
references helpful in understanding the divinity of the
Holy Spirit.
