We started on it and when we finished {1988}we had a 1000 gallon fish pond on top of the ground. I new nothing about ponds or fish , I painted it with blue rubber base paint ,I read books , and done a lot of listen to people , and a lot of them didn't know what they where talking about.
Well we were on our way , we had to have a filter system , so we went to a garden pond place to buy a filter system , this was out of the question they wonted $1600.00 dollars for one big enough for a 1000 gallon pond . The friend said no we can build one just like there's out of two 100 gal. horse tanks . WHAT I ASKED? He said that's all this is made out of, trust me OK ... Well he was wright it works .. The cost was about $100.00 dollars.
But the water wasn't clear and look bad , so we had another problem ..NO PLANTS First mistake I made was I bought a lot of plants that run into hundreds of dollars , when I should have only bought 2 or 3 hardy water lilys .You can get most of your plants out of lakes and creeks and they are free.. You need 75% plants in your pond , because it keeps it clear and feeds the fish and it helps with A LOT OF PROBLEMS..
All the water lily's you will have to buy , unless you have friend that has a pond ,if you shop around you can get them at a very good price .
DONT just use any old dirt to plant your plants , I use top soil and gravel. Put gravel in the bottom of your pot them some top soil and your plant , then gravel on top . Coy fish will spawn on top of your plants with the gravel . They will dig up your plants without the gravel on top ...
As long as you keep your filter system clean and tranplant your plants every year and give your plants fertilizer tablets , you will be fine . OH dont get me wrong there is a lot of work to having a fishpond .
We have enlarge the pond now to 2500 gallons , a 1000 gallon on top , and a 1500 gallon under ground . You need different depths in your pond , from 20 inches to 2 inches , because you sit your plants at different levels.
{B} Remove plant and rince soil off of the rootstock.
{C} Rootstock will have a main growing tip and some juvenile growing tips visible on a large rootstock.
{D} Cut off old rootstock end , leaving 4-6 " of healthy rootstock with the main growing tip. Discard old woody rootstock end.
{E} Cut off juvenile crowns.
{F} Repot trimmed rootstock { using Lilytabs } and replace in your pond .
{G} Discard juvenile growing tips , OR pot them in a 3-5 qt. soil container . Grow with 2-4 " of water over the soil. Increase water cover { lower container in your pond } to 12" to 18" as stems grow : allowing pads to float on surface . They will be blooming size this season or next. I give all my extra plants to friends .
When there is lots of food in the pond { mosquitos larva } OR { shrimp } I dont feed the fish , I let the fish eat this , it is good for them . I have frogs in my pond , and when they have baby frogs , I let the fish eat them . DONT FEED FISH WHEN YOU HAVE THESE IN YOUR POND . If there is no extra food in my pond , I feed them once a week . Feeding them more will only make your pond cloudy. I dont have any snails in my pond , I dont wont any, they are more trouble then there worth , They get in my filter system and stop it up.
I have more baby coy fish then I know what to do with , so I give them away to people that will come and get them , we put them in stock tanks around the place.
In the winter months watch the temp. if it is going to get down to frezzing , put a small beach ball in your pond , this way your fish will have a air hole to breath .
Well over the years I have leaned a lot about fishponds. If you will put your waterlillys on the bottom of your pond they will grow like crazy and get all the fertilizer that they need ...
