Isaac was born on April 21, 1992 and
lived in Fort Worth, Texas, with his mother Paula and his father Chuck. Isaac was also
blessed with a Pei brother, Theo and a Pei sister, Bailey and his feline sibling Dusty.
Isaac lived an ordinary life in a home filled with love. However, in spite of his quiet
existence in Forth Worth, Isaac became known the world wide for his extraordinary courage.
It was the Winter of 1996 when we first
met Isaac and his mom. We had joined an Internet mailing list comprised of Shar-Pei
breeders and just plain old enthusiasts who had one thing in common: their love of the
Chinese Shar-Pei. It was the Winter of 1996 when we first learned that sweet Isaac had a
dreaded disease that plagues the Shar-Pei called Amyloidosis. It is an indiscriminate
disease, a disease that knows no boundary of age, it is an evil disease.
Through the subsequent months as we all
shared in the ups and downs of being owned by this wonderful breed, we would especially
look forward to the posts from Paula. Our favorites, were the reports that Isaac had had a
great day and that his medication seemed to be working. Invariably however, there were the
posts that we dreaded - Isaac was having a bad day and the medications were not helping.
Many trips to the veterinarian's office ensued. We were with Paula on every trip in
spirit, and physically we were waiting in front of our computers for a message to appear
in our electronic mailboxes. We were always ecstatic when he rebounded. You could almost
feel the joy as it rippled through the list as each member sent encouraging words. It was
another victory for Isaac, another reprieve had been granted.
It was the Spring of 1997 that Isaac
took a turn for the worse. Posts flooded in from the United States, Canada, England,
Germany, Spain, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, South America and the
Philippines. As messages of comfort, support and love filled our mailboxes from all over
the world, we prayed.
We prayed that he would rebound once
again.
We prayed that they would find a cure in
time.
On June 18, 1997, Paula and Chuck, and
indeed the whole world, lost their precious Isaac to Renal Amyloidosis.
We lost an E-Friend and our beloved
breed lost a battle. However, Isaac's passing was not in vain. He educated many on the
devastating details of this horrible disease. He made us understand that we must not give
up the search for a cure. He made us realize that this can happen to any one of our
beloved Pei and does all too often.
In fact, from his home in Forth Worth
and through his mom's small computer -- Isaac educated the world and, united many who
share a common bond and a greater goal.
