"101 Science Surprises : Exciting Experiments With Everyday Materials " by Roy Richards
Gr. 3-5, younger with adult supervision. Some of the activities described in this book, such as making seed pictures and mirror patterns, are familiar to preschoolers. Others, such as making patterns from dodecagons, require careful measurements and the use of a compass and a protractor. Although called "science surprises," the scientific principles are never explained, so the "experiments" resemble craft projects. Nonetheless, parents looking for rainy-day activities or teachers wanting to give hands-on experience in perspective, nature studies, or geometric patterns will find good ideas here. The patterns are large, the materials needed are readily available and generally inexpensive, and the illustrations are colorful. Adult participation is required for most activities either because the directions are given in broad steps, the use of sharp instruments is required, or the manual dexterity needed is beyond the skills of many children.
1,001 Ideas for Science Projects
by Marion A., Ph.D. Brisk
Great for school science fair ideas. Used for elementary school on up.
"Everyone Poops"
by Taro Gomi, Amanda Mayer Stinchecum (Translator)
Finally, a beginning science book that really addresses the needs and interests of the very young child. Since we all eat, we all must poop. It is this basic message that this wonderful book presents in a form that is both humorous and informative.
Some reviews:
Great potty-training book "The illustrations and text are simple, funny and terrific. It's educational, and also shows toddlers where is the appropriate place for people to poop."
"Everybody poops is a humorous and educational experience For young children, this book is a great resource towards their learning about, well.... poop. As a child psychologist, I realize that only through teaching youngsters about such a socially inappropriate topic will they stop joking about it during class, lunch and at home."
" The Milly Stories : Corpses, Carnations, the Weirdness Index, And,of Course, Aunt Gloria
by Janice Lindsay.

Grades 4-6. Milly, an orphan who lives with her uncle, the undertaker, hasn't had much luck making friends in Bentwood. To make matters worse, since she's been in town, her aunt has died. And to make matters much worse, Milly still hears Aunt Gloria giving her "helpful advice," even though her aunt's gone. But Milly's luck with friends takes a turn for the better when she meets Josie at a writing class. Together, they have a Halloween party in the mortuary for the class rejects, help a ghost find peace, and make a video starring a horse about the size of a big dog. As the subtitle implies, the book is trying for an outrageous and comic tone. It succeeds much of the time, but in other instances, Lindsay, in her debut, tries too hard--and the advice-giving Aunt Gloria virtually disappears for most of the book. Still, the book's cover will draw readers in, and once there, they will find at least some of the promised laughs. Copyright© 1998, American Library Association. All rights reserved
