Granny's Country Cottage
~The Garden ~

Gardening is a mental therapy for me. When the stress of day to day life gets me in a funk--off to the garden I go. In September 1997 I moved from my home of 7 years. Or should I say my garden of 7 years.

For 2 months prior to moving, I dug bulbs, trees, perennials and some shrubs. I took what I could. To this day it breaks my heart to see my trees blooming at the old house. It's almost as though I left a part of me there. Upon moving I went into a depression about the condition of my new yard. The previous owner had been old and ill for years prior to dying. The yard was in a shambles. My husband removed 8 tractor trailer loads of brush, junk, briars and trash from this yard. He brought in that much top soil too! During Christmas I looked out the window to see only dirt. No grass, No pretty shrubs to check for buds, no bulbs peeking their heads up from the earth. I was getting depressed.
Fortunately for me a friend and fellow gardening fanatic offered to come over and help me get my bulbs in the ground ~ hoping to be able to see some blooms in the spring. While this friend and I no longer speak I will never forget her help on that cold, cold day we froze our butts off planting at least 500 bulbs of all kinds. Thanks Jen.

Some of the daffodill and tulip bulbs did bloom and my wide variety of tiger lillies are in bloom. The bulbs that didn't bloom did get leaves so, I am hoping this next spring will bring an abundance of blooms. Other areas of the yard are beginning to look nice. There is a nice green lawn where there was once dirt. My roses survived the moved but, are having a hard time fighting fungus this year due to the mass amounts of rain we have had. And I planted a "red bed". Perennials of all red flowers. It's a nice site to see when driving into the driveway. I guess I can finally say ~ "I've planted roots" once again. This is the last time. My yard is now My Yard! Forever!

Of course, as any gardener knows, you are never finished. There is always room for another flower bed, bulb garden or vegetable garden. After being here for a summer I see that I have alot of work this fall. Many things need to be moved. Alot of things were planted last year "just to get them in the ground before they died."
And of course, there are always weeds to pull.

One of the nicest parts of gardening is sharing. I have a piece of this from so and so and some of this from you know who. It's kind of like a flower exchange. Then you will get the phone calls saying ... "remember that piece of such and such you gave me, well, it's doing so good. You have to come see it."
