Loads of Tips N Tricks to help your home
and computer run more smoothly.

Domestic Tips N Tricks

*For teens with acne, apply liquid Maalox to your face at night and rinse off in the morning.

*Fill a spray bottle 1/4 full of conditioner and the rest with water for a leave in conditioner. Use on clean wet hair.

*Whole cloves will freshen your breath. Do not eat or swallow them.

*For sensitive or allergy eyes, use a mixture of 1 part baby shampoo and 2 parts water to remove eye make up.

*If you have trouble with fungi nails, drink a glass of tomato or clamato juice with 1 tsp.cider vinegar added daily.  Also soak the nail in peroxide daily.

*Wash you hair in eggs first then shampoo for shiny hair.

*Spray some hairspray on a toothbrush then brush eyebrows to groom them.

*To avoid a hangover drink a glass of alka-seltzer followed by a glass of water before bed.

*Take a rubber band and wrap it around the edge of the jar's lid. Then just open it as normal. The rubber band helps you get a really good grip on the lid so you can open it easily.

*To clean your bird cage easily, try working in layers.  Remove the top of the cage (or slide out the bottom), cut 10 or so sheets of newspaper to size and layer them over the cage bottom.   Ensure complete coverage, especially along the edges.    When you want to clean it, just remove a layer or two of paper at a time.

*To remove adhesive bandages more easily, try heating them with a blow dryer before removal; or else rub them with olive or baby oil first.

* When your vehicle's outside mirrors are adjusted properly, they will provide the widest view possible.  Even the tiniest glimpse of the sides of your vehicle means they are turned too far inward.  For proper adjustment, turn them just beyond the point where you can see the side of your car (but no further). You want a rear view, but of the lane(s) next to you.

* If you're planning a move but aren't adept at reconnecting stereo systems, VCRs, and the like, just mark the cables and their corresponding outlets (on the components themselves) with matching colors, letters or numbers--a different one for each connection. You can do this with colored tape, stickers, or acrylic paint.

* A fast and easy way to peel garlic is to put the cloves in hot water for a little while, then peel them.  The skin comes right off in a jiffy with no mess, also you can put them in boiling water for 30 seconds, remove them, drop them into cold water, then slip off the skins.

*To deter leaf-eating insects process 2 whole hot red-peppers and 3 cloves of garlic in a blender. This is added to one gallon of water, and allowed to sit for 24 hours.  Then dilute in a spray bottle in half with water, and add one teaspoon liquid soap per 16 ounces. To relieve infestation spray heavily in the evening, and repeat in three days, then ween to a light evening misting once a week for continued prevention.

*A natural home remedie for deterring bugs from flowers and veggies (and plants) - use 3 parts water & 1 part bubbing alcohol in a spray contanter.  Mist about once a week.

*There is nothing more natural than nature itself, get yourself a few "praying Mantises" they can eat more than their share of critters and they won't bother your plants.

*Natural pesticides are marigolds, snapdragons, nasturtiums, hot peppers and alyssum, plant these as borders and among the veggies.

*If the problem is one of crawling insects (as opposed to flying) try running a very narrow band of baking soda around the area
you wish to protect.

*Mixing a couple of tablespoons of dish washing soap with about 16oz. of water should kill any insects your having problems with, such as aphids, ants, wasp, and should work on grasshoppers, however, dont use concentrated soap.

'Puter Tips N Tricks

TIME FOR THE MONTHLY 'PUTER CLEANING!!!!

Routine Tune-up's for Computers
(Author unknown)

The following 6 actions should be done at least once a month. However, heavy internet usage dictates that they be done once a week. By not doing these actions, you will see your computer performing slower & slower until it may finally lock up. It will eventually not execute programs correctly (events out of order, colors wrong, sounds broken, etc.) and on most computer's the mouse will disappear! All you can do then is press reset but it will disappear again shortly. So, take a deep breath & let's get into your machine.

HONEY, will you take out the trash pleeeeease?

First, let's find the trash. Click START/FIND/FILES OR FOLDERS. Type in *.tmp then ENTER. These temporary files are created by Windows and are SUPPOSED (minor Windows flaw) to be closed out when you shut down your computer. Sometimes Windows forgets some. Enough of those leftovers are called TRASH! Delete them.

Second, Remember the letter to Mr/Miss Wonderful that you wrote months ago before you found out they were not worthy of your time? Throw it & all the other "old stuff" into the recycle bin by deleting them. Especially true for old pictures.

Third, Empty the recycle bin! Every time you empty the kitchen trash can, empty the recycle bin for me, ok? It's icon looks like a trash can for a reason!

Keep minimum stuff ( bytes:-)) on your CLIPBOARD. Clipboard stuff is stored on your RAM memory. You were probably too cheep to get lots of RAM so don't slow down your system by using up RAM to hold something you don't need. When something is put on the clipboard, Windows wipes it clean first. So why not put something tiny on the clipboard to keep the RAM freed up for faster computing? Let's do to: Put onto the desktop any text document like this one your're reading now. Highlight a small word...like..."Pete" Do this by holding down the "Ctrl" key and run the mouse over..."Pete" You just cleaned off the clipboard & put "pete" on it "Pete" is a lot smaller then the last item you coppied/cut or whatever some program decided to put there for quick use. RAM is "precious"' protect it always.

CLEAN out THE Internet folder. Each time you visit a web site & click through it's pages, each page's web address is stored in the HISTORY folder and the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folder. Two hour's on the web & my folder is so full my mouse freezes! Delet them away. Click START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL Double click on the INTERNET icon. The folder you're looking at has 6 tabs. We will deal with the NAVIGATION and ADVANCED tabs.

Click NAVIGATION. See "HISTORY" on the bottom half? Set the days to 1 if you use the web a lot, set to 5 if you don't. Now click "VIEW HISTORY" You can count them or look at the total at the bottom left. Anyone else on your ‘puter can see wher you've been!! But, too many will clog up your machine. Click EDIT/SELECT ALL, now click FILE/DELETE. Close the NAVIGATION window.

Click ADVANCED. See the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES in the middle? Click "View files"- Click EDIT/SELECT ALL, now click FILE/DELETE. Close the TEMPORARY INTERNET WINDOW. While you're on this ADVANCED page, put a check mark next to the "Warn Before Accepting Cookies" I'll tell ya about cookies later. Close the Internet Properties window then close the Control Panel window. Now we gotta do two built-in Window95- maintenance programs

SCAN DISK Basically it scans the disk for errors. Click START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/SCANDISK. Make sure there is or put a dot next to "THOROUGH" and a check next to "Automatically FIX ERRORS". Click start and go do the weeks laundry cuz it usually takes a while. When it's done, close the window. Piece of cake, huh?

DEFRAG Imagine a bag of M&M's on a platter, then you eat all the red ones. I come over and eat all the yellow ones. See all those random empty spaces on the platter, that's what your hard drive looks like if you don't DEFRAG once in a while. It takes the hard drive longer to find information if it's scattered around like the M&M's. Let's push them all together. Click START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/DISK DEFRAGMENTER. On the tiny window that appears, click "OK". On the next tiny window, click "START" Zooooom, off it goes! Think I was silly about the M&M crap? Click "SHOW DETAILS" (told ya)

COOKIES....COOKIES....COOKIES....COOKIES...COOKIES...COOKIES

"WARNING, Will Robinson..DANGER-DANGER" A little known trivia fact is that Mr. Robot was talking about:..COOKIES.. They look good but taste terrible. MOTTO: Don't eat them by accepting them. Cookies are a mini tattle tale program that a web site wants to put onto your hard drive. Cookies look at the web addresses in your Internet History folder and tell the web site what other web sites you have visited. Is it for marketing or spying or to find out what your interests are so you can be sent even more junk mail (spam). If you've never heard of cookies, then you're probably laughing at me like the M&M story. OK, follow me for a reality check. Click START/PROGRAMS/WINDOWS/EXPLORER. Think of what you see as a book that's folder open. Whatever you highlight (by clicking on the word) on the left, it's contents will be shown on the right. On the left page, click the "+" next to the word ‘WINDOWS'. Under WINDOWS ARE all the sub folders in WINDOWS. Oh my gosh! Is there really a folder called COOKIES? Click on the word COOKIES to highlight it. The right page will now show it's contents. If you didn't know anything about COOKIES before now, and you didn't have a check next to "WARN BEFORE ACCEPTING COOKIES" on the ADVANCED TAB folder in Intenet Properties, I'll bet you've got a lot of damn COOKIES on the right page. They're all squealing like 7 th grade red-headed girls gossiping. Let's flush them out. Click EDIT/SELECT ALL, click FILE/DELET. What? You say they all didn't go away? HaHa, you learnd too late and you've got a taste of..."SUPER COOKIE". 256 & 2048 are Super Booger cookies, look bad, taste bad & they're all yours.

And last but not least, let us not forget all those little temp devils in our MS-DOS. This is where all these temporary files wind up if we are not careful.

To delete these, we must do the following.....

1) Shut all open programs down..
2) Click to Windows..Start..
3) Click on Shut Down..
4) Make sure the little black dot is in front of..
Re-Start in MS-DOS..
5) Click on Enter...
6) You should now be in MS-DOS mode..
7) Look down left side of your screen for Windows prompt:
8) Type in... deltree tempor~1
9) Click on Enter..
10) You will be asked
if you want to delete all temp files...yn
11) Click on..y..
12) Click on enter..
13) You should now be deleting all temp files in MS-DOS...
14) If you have never done this before,
you may find this may take a while,
so sit back and relax...
15) When it is all done deleting,
it will show you the Windows prompt again..
16) At this point, all that remains is to hit..
Control, Alt, Delete, ..at the same time to reboot..

Congradulations....your puter is now free of all those temp files that tend to slow things down ..

Window Washer

If you want to make sure no one knows what you're doing on your PC, this shareware program is for you. Window Washer cleans up cookies, history files, cache files, and location or address history lists in Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. It also removes document history, find history, run history, and files in your temp directory and Recycle Bin. This newest release offers an improved "bleach" function that lets you erase files in removable drives, clean AOL Internet files, and cancel during a wash.

Welcome to FileWorld: Window Washer

ZIPPED CONTINUOUS BACKUP

Do this regularly each week.. it only takes seconds to do - and it creates the insurance that no matter what crashes, you will have the ability to recover ALL OF AOL and ALL of your FILES !
All programs, including AOL should be shut down. Then,
FROM the desktop...
1 -
go to WINDOWS EXPLORER and scroll down to AMERICA ONLINE 4.0
2 - RIGHT CLICK on America Online 4.0
3 - Select "Add to AOL 4.0.zip"
A folder will be created in your "C" drive entitled
"America Online 4.0.Zip".
It will be overwritten each time you repeat the above and then include anything new you have added between "backups". When needed, this file may be unzipped and replaces exactly the original AOL program - favorite places and buddy list as well as "My Files", as of the last time you used it!
(Need a zipping program for this)

Get Y2K Ready

Have you done this simple correction on your PC to be ready for Year 2000?

You must change the "short date style"  (note instructions for the long date too) A setting located in Windows' Control Panel allows the system to use a two-digit or four-digit year as the Windows default for "short date style." This is the format that many software applications use as their default date format.
To avoid problems that may result with a two-digit year upon the change from 1999 to 2000, each user needs to change the short date style to indicate a four-digit year.

Windows `95
1) Click the Start button once.
2) Go to Settings, then click Control Panel once.
3) Double click the Regional Settings icon.
4) Click the Date tab at the top once.
5) For the short date style make sure that MM/dd/yyyy is selected.
6) Make sure that the long date style also has a yyyy format.
7) Click the Apply button, then the OK button.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 or Windows 3.1
1) Double click the Main group icon.
2) Double click the Control Panel icon.
3) Double click the International icon.
4) In the Date Format box click the Change button.
5) Put an X in the century box.
6) In the current window, click the OK button.
7) Click the OK button in the International Settings win.

Save your mouse!

Here's a nifty little thought experiment you can do right at home.
How often do you choose a command--from within any Windows 95 program that opens a dialog box in which you immediately click the OK button, without  doing anything else? For example, how often do you choose File + Print  and then instantly click OK? Or choose Insert +Page Break and just click OK? You probably do it a lot. Now ask yourself this next question:
How much wear and tear on your mouse could you save if, when you opened one of these dialog boxes, the pointer was already pointing  right at the OK button? Well, let's say you have to move the pointer two inches to get to the OK button every time you print. Then let's say you print an average of six times per day. That's one foot per day, times 200 working days per year--you'd save 200 feet of mouse movement  per year just while printing. (That's equivalent to NOT pushing your  mouse from one end of the corridor to the other!)  Well, guess what: You CAN experience this savings:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Settings + Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Mouse icon.
4. If you have a standard mouse, click the General tab;
if you have an Intellipoint mouse, click the Step Savers tab.
5. Select Snap To and then click OK.

From now on, whenever you open a dialog box in ANY Windows 95 program, the mouse pointer automatically moves to point at the dialog box's default button--the button with the darker border (usually OK or Save or Print) when you first open the dialog box. You'll work faster--and have one happy mouse.

Lose the AOL Pop-up Ads

Avoid seeing those ads that pop up every time you sign on
1. Choose the My AOL + Preferences menu.
2. In the Preferences menu, click the Marketing icon.
3. In the Marketing Preferences menu, click the Pop Up button.
4. The Pop-up Preferences dialog box launches,  describing why pop-up menus appear on AOL. Undeterred, click Continue.
5. Click the No, I Do Not Want to Receive Special AOL Members Only Pop-up Offers button.
6. Click OK.
7. Click OK when you see the "Your preference has been sent" message.
8. Click OK once more to another message box telling you how to go back to Marketing Preferences--just in case you find yourself missing those pop-up ads.

The next time you sign on, AOL won't display the ads.

BETTER LISTS WITH BULLETS

Most word processing programs have easy ways to create bulleted lists; unfortunately, AOL e-mail doesn't have quite that many features. You can easily create the bullet character, however, by typing its ASCII code
1. Turn on Number Lock on your keyboard.
2. Hold down the Alt key and enter 249 on the numeric keypad.

The bullet character appears in your document. If you're creating a long list, you can save a little time by selecting the bullet, copying it (press Ctrl + C), moving your cursor to the
beginning of your next list item, and pasting it (press Ctrl + V).
