They left behind families and friends. Carrying dreams in their hearts, they sailed to a new and promising future. As with millions of orther immigrants, the first sight they saw of their new country was the Statue Of Liberty, the first ground they stood on was on Ellis Island.
They were each so very young to have ventured so far on a dream.
Rose came to America to be a governess to the children of a wealthy New York City family and Aniela, a young woman who had been orphaned as a child, was fleeing a childhood filled with pain. Paul was a man with a dream of opportunity and freedom and Stephan was one of four siblings whose mother had smuggled them out of Czarist Russia as the Bolsheviks were coming into power.
They eventually settled in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. Stephan and Aniela in Tamaqua, Schuylkill County where Stephan found work as a deep coal miner.
Paul and Rose in Lansford, Carbon County where Paul opened a tavern which became a town landmark.
Their lives in America were not easy, but they never sought ease only opportunity. They gave us, their descendants, an abiding pride in their courage, a deep respect for their cultures, and a loving admiration for their morals and ethics.
And they gave us the greatest gift they could possibily have given ..... America.
