They said it would take a little while
But I still had time on my side
I can't see how they made that observation
And I wonder do they really understand
I have felt so hopeless and lost at times
But then you asked me your usual question
How can you lose something you've never had
And to that I had no reply.

I have tried to live life in your love
But somewhere I have gone astray
Lost somewhere in all this senseless giving
In which no one ever seems to receive
My yesterdays have had their joys and sorrows
Something inside tells me I should be grateful
But words are meaningless on their own
And to that I had no reply.

You were looking for a response on your terms
But no words were shared that lonely day
Expectations were in vain when you saw the result
Acceptance was the only sane option open
And so you drifted away saying it was forever
But I couldn't believe your anger filled words
How can you lose something you've never had
And to that you had no reply.

We told you so was the usual greeting
From those who thought they knew everything
But I took no notice of them
I had a life in my hand and I wanted to live
So I couldn't stop to argue and fight now
I was trying so hard to find a love to share
That words had become meaningless on their own
And to that we had no reply.
