When I was a little girl, shoes were rationed due to the war. My father purchased boots, because he thought they were practical and would last. I wanted Mary Janes, which were little black patent leather, with a strap. I felt so "Olive Oyle" (a character in PopEye who wore big shoes).
I did get a beautiful green snow suit though.
