Building Our Picket Fence
April 24th...
THE PICKET FENCE
I am so excited to be finally putting up our picket fence. Here are a few pictures depicting Day 1!! Today (with the help of our friend Mike) we put together some of the frame, dug the post holes, inserted the frame and leveled it up so we could cement the posts in. Tomorrow we start the cement work and continue to paint the pickets. (All 309 of them!!) More pictures and updates coming soon!!
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 4/29.... We found out that we are not within our city code on our fence so we had to stop working on it until we could get everything figured out. We think that everything is going to be okay but we are waiting (somewhat impatiently) for the city guy to come back and check everything...
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 5/5....
We received our Permit today (FINALLY!!) We are putting up the pickets along the front street and are almost finished.
The problem that we had with our permit is that our fence was too high for being on the corner along the alley. (The legal height for a fence that does not have 80% visibility on a corner is 30 inches... yes... you read correctly... it is ONLY 30 inches.) We remedied the problem by moving the fence toward our house ten feet and putting our travel trailer close to the alley. We had to cut down all bushes along the alley and had to use a back hoe to remove the amazing root system so they wouldn't grow back up under the trailer. What a job!!
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 5/8....
We finished all the pickets along the front street and most of the pickets along the driveway. It is looking so pretty!!
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 5/10....
Today Glen and I cemented in the posts that will run along the alley side. The travel trailer will actually be outside the fence but I think that I am going to like this arrangement better. I planted the corner with strawberries donated by my wonderful neighbor and mulched them real good with straw. I hope I can keep the weeds down until the strawberries take over. We needed something there that wouldn't ruin when the trailer ran over them but I didn't want grass. Grass here needs to be watered all the time!!!
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 5/11....
Hurray!!! It is raining cats and dogs today!! What a nice relief from the dry spell that has lasted for three weeks. It is also nice because I am able to spend a little time in my house cleaning up all the dust bunnies that like to visit while I am outside in my garden. 8^)
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 5/21.... We finally finished putting up and painting the framing of the rest of the fence. Next week we are going to have a garage sale so will work on that instead.
Here is a view looking down the alley. We used to have a horrible row of ugly bushes along the property and we parked the trailer inside these. At first the fence was going to run along the alley but because of the permit problem we decided to utilize that space by taking out the bushes. We moved the trailer over toward the alley in order to move the fence 10 feet inside our property line. It is really working out great. We will actually have more yard to garden in and we no longer have to break out in blisters whenever we have to trim on the bushes. Sometimes when things aren't always going the way we think they should we should just let them work themselves out and they might even work out better than we think!!
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 6/12.... Well, so far so good.... only seven more sections to go. Glen didn't like this picture very much. He said it makes it look crooked. It really isn't crooked at all though.
FENCE UPDATE!! as of 7/04.... WE FINISHED THE FENCE AROUND THE SOUTH YARD AND IT LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL!! HURRAY!!!
