George Jefferson Stewart

George Jefferson Stewart was born in 1817 in Jones County, Georgia. He was the son of Charles and Martha (Greer)Stewart. Charles Stewart and his brother George were born in Virginia shortly before the start of the American Revolution. The came to Georgia in the early 1800,probably for land that was being given in grants at that time. They married sisters Martha and Sarah Greer. George Jefferson moved to Bibb County, Alabama in 1843 and in 1845 married Elizabeth Steele. Elizabeth was the daughter of the Reverend John Steele and Nancy(Major)Steele who had arrived in Bibb County in 1819, shortly after Alabama became a state.
George and Elizabeth had eleven children. Today the descendants of George and Elizabeth comprise one of the larger families of Bibb County
