MY OTWELL FAMILY
Most researchers into the Otwell family generally agree that the first known Otwell to arrive in America was one THOMAS OTWELL who came by way of ship called the Bona Nova from England. The exact date of his arrival is open to conjecture. However, we do know from the records of The Virginia Company that he was counted in the 1624 census that was taken by representatives of the King of England to determine exactly who was employed by the Virginia Company and their age and when they came to America and the name of the ship. these records are still around , in 1996, and can be found in most good libraries across America. These records are rather complete and very revealing in that they describe some of the correspondence and in some cases the actual letters exchanged between the Colonies and England. The purpose of the Virginia Company was to raise tobacco and they were partners with The King of England. It was only when the King thought he was being "cheated" out of his fair share of the profits that he ordered an audit and census to be conducted.
